Brewers option JJ Hardy, DFA Bill Hall

J.J. Hardy-SS-Brewers Aug. 12 - 12:11 pm et

Brewers optioned shortstop J.J. Hardy to Triple-A Nashville.

Alcides Escobar was recalled to take his spot on the roster and on the field. Hardy has posted a disappointing .229/.300/.367 batting line in 371 at-bats this season with 11 home runs and 45 RBI.

Im guessing his Brewers career could be at an end, depending how Escobar does.

Bill Hall

Crikey, they're a bigger train wreck than we are.

But, but, but... Bill Hall is the best third baseman in major league baseball :(

If Aramis ends up on the DL again I can see Hendry trying to pick him up if he's still available

EDIT: They also gave their pitching coach the boot...

According to MLB.com's Adam McCalvy, the Brewers have "dismissed" pitching coach Bill Castro.

Beyond Yovani Gallardo, the Brewers' starting corps has struggled mightily this season. It's not all Castro's fault -- the issue should have been addressed in the offseason, or even at the trade deadline -- but coaches tend to draw the blame for on-field issues. The Brewers have a 4.84 team ERA this year. That's the highest mark since 2003, when the club finished 68-94. Chris Bosio has been named interim pitching coach.

Agreed, I would definitely give Bill Hall a shot.

With the way Hall has regressed, I thyink I'd be more comfortable giving the spot to Vitters at this point if it opened up. Hall is... blech

I dont know how it works, but if its low risk Id take the off chance that 2006 Bill Hall still exists in there. Didnt he used to be a second baseman? hmmm.

I really wouldnt mind getting our hands on JJ Hardy, however.

Can someone explain to me what is so great about Alcides Escobar? I'm not seeing it.

A speedy contact hitter with decent plate patience. It's not that spectacular, but I'm assuming that the bulk of his value comes in his defense, ala Elvis Andrus.

I think Escobar is a little overrated in the grand scheme of things (like how he rates in Top MLb prospect lists), but as far as shortstop prospects go he's probably one of the best in all of baseball since it's such a thin position.

Bill Hall along with any other player that falls off a cliff like that are going to face speculation that they were PED users. I don't know if he did it or not, but I do think it is fair to speculate because if he didn't he should have lobbied like hell (and he didn't) to have his union out the guys that did.

What? No he shouldn't have. It's not his duty as a baseball player to try and out steroid users. It's none of his business.

I'm not saying this guy did steroids or anything, but I'm going to assume he did because other guys did them.

Have to say, I saw this coming. They HAVE to do something. They're arguably the most talented team in the division (even beating us out for that title). Escobar should be fun to watch. Plus they're giving a new coach a chance to work on that starting five.

I probably would've expected Hardy to return in September, but judging by the comments from Ken Macha and Doug Melvin (Melvin sat Macha down and told him that he's to start Escobar at least 4 times a week), it seems more likely that Hardy's gone in a trade before September even comes. I'll just be pissed if it's for Doug Davis, but it's not like Hardy did much to sustain his trade value. Even if Hardy doesn't get traded in August, he won't be on the Brewers roster on Opening Day 2010.

Hall was probably a long time coming -- I don't see anyone taking him on waivers or trading for him, so it's likely the Brewers are going to have to eat the $8.5 million he's still owed. At least he won't be wasting a roster spot anymore, though.

I wouldn't be surprised if the next head to roll is Macha's. It was pretty clear during the press conference that Melvin wasn't happy with the way Macha's been running the team, and we got that sense earlier in the year with the Mat Gamel situation (Melvin eventually had to send Gamel down because Macha just wasn't playing him and was wasting service time). He only signed a two year deal before this season, setting the Brewers up to have to make a decision this offseason -- they traditionally hate having their managers enter the final year of their contract and have to answer job security questions. Either Macha gets and extension this offseason or he gets fired, and I'm more willing to bet that Willie Randolph or someone else manages this team next year.
