Smoltz is scheduled to start Sunday.

*benches all Padres on his fantasy team*

You have Padres on your fantasy team?

Well, Heath Bell, but he wouldn't really apply I guess, though I can count him out for any save opportunities this weekend I'm sure...or at least successful ones.

16 team NL only league?

smoltz goes 7-0 with an ERA under 1 as julio lugo OPS's over 1.000; red sox miss playoffs and their fans drive to st. louis and burn down the city.

Hmm, I'm in Southern Indiana but I think I'd join the convoy to help with that project. I can pretend I'm a Red Sox fan for a few hours. :-))

Since he's benching them against Smoltz I assumed it was a hacking mass league.

Naturally, Smoltz returns to his Cy Young form in his Cardinals debut. Five scoreless innings, 3 hits, no walks, and 9 strikeouts. Does anybody still disbelieve the magic pixie dust theory?

Unbelievable. Seven K's in a row at one point.

A friend of mine and I were talking about this today and he said, "Maybe the most predictable dominating pitching performance in MLB this season."

Looked pretty good. Velocity was there, slider and splitter looked as good as always. However, it was just 5 innings and against the Padres. Still makes me wonder why the Sox cut him. The only thing I can think of is that they didn't want to pay him the 35K a day or whatever when they have Bucholz and Bowden waiting in the wings.

FWIW concerning the other games thread, I would have been posting updates even if he would have gotten shelled.

his velocity on the season is down about 1.5 mph (on average) for his FB and close to 2.0 mph on his slider. naturally he will be spectacular for the cards.

I understand Smoltz is coming off surgery, but that small of loss of velocity is pretty meaningless. Tim Lincecum has had the same. I don't think he'll be spectacular, but his peripherals with Boston suggested he'll be a pretty decent pitcher going forward.

he could be a decent back of the rotation guy i suppose, but the cardinals are already running away with the division so i'm not sure how much that matters at this point. his numbers were pretty good the first 25 pitches of the game, then not so good pitches 26-50, then horrendous 51+. maybe he can be a short-inning guy in the playoffs but unless he comes down with the jeff weaver/jeff suppan magic, i don't think he'll have much of an impact there.

As much as I am a believer in teh pixi3 dust, I'm willing to wait one more start when Smoltz will face an actual MLB lineup and not the Padres.

Normally I would agree with this, but the Padres did just take 2 of 3 from the Cubs.

Which is why you have to give Smoltz another start before considering him another miracle of the pixie dust.
