Wow, 6 years and 60 million dollars remaining on his contract. He has a .317 OBP and a .744 OPS this year. He's been better in the past but I really don't like this move for the Sox. Of course, Kenny Williams will be hailed for such a "balls out" move by the slobbering Chicago media, even though he's locked up at least 116 million dollars in 2 questionable moves.

You can't argue with Peavy ... he's proven. Rios is definitely a risky move, IMO. I'm surprised the posters on WSI and Soxtalk aren't talking more about the risk. They are almost universally hailing Kenny for this.

Really?

REALLY?!

Yea, you're really not going to get unbiased analysis from the posters on those sites. They pretty much worship the ground Kenny Williams walks on. He could sign Neifi Perez to a 5 year 50 million dollar contract and they'll find a way to praise him for it.(And so will the Chicago media)

Everybody is excited about the move. Nobody is going to worry about the risk until the money situation screws them next year or the year after.

Wow, the White Sox picked up a younger yet worse version of Alfonso Soriano. Rios is a career .786 OPS OF, whereas Soriano is a career .840. If the Cubs fans are rough on Soriano, then the White Sox are going to kill Rios.

Rios plays better defense, younger, and plays CF

Which makes him a really solid 4th OFer, not a $60 million dollar man. White Sox are not going to like this deal as he is getting older.

I don't think this is that bad of a deal. Rios has some talent, just not enough talent to justify his outrageous contract. But considering the White Sox are a large-market team and have some contracts coming off the books at the end of this year (and they have a payroll of about $34mil less than the Cubs this year), it shouldn't seem like they'll be that hamstrung by his bloated contract (they're certainly in a better position to handle that contract than Toronto).

Steve Stone was going on and on about how the Blue Jays wouldnt just let the Sox have him ala Randy Myers this AM. I wish i had his quotes but it was something like you never see that happen, impossible blah blah blah im steve stone and i know what im talking about. Jays just got the savings they were looking for in the Holladay deal. I think JP got lucky and it was a good move to not pull him back.

This move has to have been Williams getting caught blocking Rios from Detroit. I don't know but i don't see why else he would put a claim on a player with a 60 million buck contract.

According to angry Steve Stone, the Sox tried to get Rios before the deadline and couldn't.

Good move by the Sox. He's projected to be about exactly worth his contract to an average team... he's worth significantly more than that to a team in a close pennant race like the Sox.

Good move by the Jays too.

His defense must be incredibly stellar, because he's currently OPSing 110 points lower than Kosuke and they're making similar amounts of money. Or Kosuke is worth a good bit more than he's making.

It's this type of move (right or wrong) that upsets me about the Cubs current ownership situation. Hendry's hands were tied significantly from taking on someone like Peavy who would have helped our rotation immensely or take a risk on an offensive player that clearly could have helped.

Grr.

And in the corner Kosuke is exposed as at best a mediocre player. In center he's pretty damn good.

I get what you are saying. But with our OF situation, Rios wouldn't make any sense.

Oh god yes. Rios is the wrong answer to every question the Cubs have. I'm just saying in general.

and usually is a crappy hitter

He's actually a pretty undervalued player. This is a good move for the White Sox, IMO.

undervalued? rios might be the most overrated player in baseball

Very few people are saying that he is worth his contract outside of a few places. So, there is no way he is the most overrated player in baseball. If he was so overrated, the White Sox would have had to send a token minor-leaguer or something. He is an OK hitter suffering from a little bad luck this year, but he plays excellent defense and plays center. Those are two very undervalued things in the game. I know you don't like UZR, but it has consistently rated him as one of the best defenders in baseball.

I'm talking about ov=verrated in terms of the way people talk him up... especially ESPN and such. They constantly make him out to be some superstar hitter. It's not just ESPN though.
