Jeff Passan, that name sounds familiar. Sammy's personal hitting instructor? Cubs hitting coach?

Jeff Pentland?

Yeah, that's who I was thinking of. I'm getting senile.

I think you're confusing me with Fred.

I'm pretty suspicious of this data. It's fun to look at, but the whole "best slider in baseball" thing is a little overstating what we know.

Sequence and other pitches matter to this. For all we know, a pitcher could have a mediocre curveball that shows up as amazing on these stats, because his fastball is so awful that batters are looking to tee off on it and don't mind whiffing on the occasional curve trying to get it.

You mean like Jarrod Washburn and Ryan Dempster?

There's a difference between "most effective slider" and "best slider". It's possible Dempster has the most effective, but he doesn't have the best.

Agreed. The article is a very intersting read. But I think it speaks more to a pitchers use of a particular pitch in the situation that they throw it in. The fact that Demp has the best slider doesn't mean his breaks harder or catches more corners etc but it does speak to the fact that he sets the slider up very well with how he uses his other pitches.

This doesn't have anything to do with this article, but I've never seen batters look as foolish against a slider as many have against Michael Wuertz's.
