Now that I think about it, its probably not even to get a fresh arm in the pen, but they might have seen something in Stevens delivery or mechanics and they wanted him to work on it, otherwise, theres no reason for this move. Freaking Mitch Atkins. I bet when he was called into the Iowa managers office he thought he was being sent to Tennessee.

You know, you gotta get a fresh arm in the bullpen. It sucks that Stevens had to go, but I can't get too mad about it.

But why Stevens instead of Samrdjzia? Why Atkins instead of Gaub, Ryan, Ascanio, or I dont know, anyone else?

Is Gaub on the 40 man roster? I'm guessing that it was just a matter of (1) who was on the 40 man and (2) who had not pitched recently.

But you know who would have been better than Mitch Atkins? Not Mitch Atkins.

I suppose the fact that it wasnt David Patton suggests that theyve given up on him once and for all.

Still no official word from the Cubs on this.

rotoworlds on it.

Mitch Atkins-S-Cubs Jul. 29 - 11:51 am et

Cubs recalled RHP Mitch Atkins from Triple-A Iowa.

Atkins has a 92/37 K/BB ratio in 108 innings for Triple-A Round Rock this season. He should do fine in long relief, but carries no immediate fantasy value. The Cubs simply wanted a fresh bullpen arm.

Jeff Stevens-R-Cubs Jul. 29 - 11:44 am et

Cubs optioned RHP Jeff Stevens to Triple-A Iowa.

Stevens earned a promotion to the big leagues in early July after posting a 2.18 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 43/20 K/BB ratio in 30 appearances for Iowa. He allowed two earned runs in 6 1/3 innings with the Cubs.

It's strange that they're keeping up Samardzija after all the innings he's thrown. They could have kept Berg up here instead. Atkins has been horrible this season.

Any scouting report on this Atkins guy? Is he a mop-up guy or anything more?

This year has been his worst year in the minors. Looking at his stats it looks like he is equally as bad vs. lefties and righties.

He looks like Herman Munster

Especially considering sending Shark down serves a purpose to stretch him out as a starter, which is where his future is, at least one would think.

Nope, you've evaluated that one poorly. I'd suprised if we see him again prior to the rosters expanding...but not because the Cubs have given up on him 'once and for all'.

I think Patton is still rehabbing his groin actually. He only threw 40 pitches or so the other night against the BayBears and they pulled him after 2 runs scored on errors after the 2nd. I can only piece together that it's because of the injury. I was secretly hoping they released him or tradedf him or something. Didn't happen :(

They let Jeremy Papelbon throw the majority of the game. Hopefully if Patton is fully healthy they continue to keep him down in AA, he doesn't belong on the MLB roster.

I wonder if it has anything to do with Shark's ability to throw multiple innings, as opposed to Stevens being able to throw just 1-2 at a time.

If they can hide him away for the rest of the season, Patton would make a nice arm to have in the system.
