Why does Lou keep throwing Heilman?

Heilman makes Dempster look like a CYA winner when he threw from the pen. He can't throw any out pitches for strikes consistently - so he either issues the walk or serves it up for a walloping. He is a grade A bum and needs to go away.

Cover your ass?

He does kind of suck, but he's probably a step above a Grade A bum.

what's really amazing is that he keeps bringing him in with runners on base when he's been absolutely brutal at holding inherited runners. i mean, if you need to use him at least do it to start an inning if possible.

Heilman's the type of arm you throw out there in the 5th last night when Dempster clearly didn't have it. And you hope to get 2-3 innings out of him without giving up a ton of runs.

exactly. not to mention that they really could have used a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the 4th for Dempster on that bases loaded, two out situation. i know that's early to be using a PH, but Dempster was on a short leash anyway and it seemed like a really critical opputunity to put up a big number.

obviously the flip side of that was that the pen was spent from the night before and Lou wanted to get as many innings out of Dempster as possible.

Pretty much. I'm no fan of Heilman, but pick your spots better, Lou. Continuing to send him out there with runners on is just dumb.

Why did he keep throwing Howry last year?

Howry threws strikes. Easily hittable strikes, but strikes nonetheless. Heilman walks everybody, yet Lou hasn't lost confidence in him for some reason.

It is rather anomalous. Lou seems to have a deep-seated aversion to walking people -- especially from relievers -- yet Heilman is evidently exempted.

Who the hell knows.

I like the Cubs 1,2,3 in the bullpen and id be all for using marshall as 4th instead of Heilman but that aint gonna happen. So Id like too see Stevens unseat Heilman as the fourth. He pumps his fastballs in the zone much better than Heilman and dares people to hit. Heilman just dances around all the place walking everybody and still getting hit.

Dusty had a fetish for crappy infielders. Lou has a fetish for crappy relievers.

Dusty had his own fetish for crappy relievers - The good Dr. Veres was one of many. Just clarifying that Lou is still notches up over the village imbecile aka Dusty Baker in my book.

I wish Wuertz had been exempt.
