Cubs Looking For A Lefty Reliever

By Mike Axisa [July 25 at 5:53pm CST]

With starter Ted Lilly on the shelf for approximately three weeks, ESPN Chicago's Bruce Levine says Cubs GM Jim Hendry may have been pushed in the direction of adding a starter before Friday's trade deadline. The team could opt to move Sean Marshall back into the rotation, but that would leave manager Lou Piniella without a reliable lefthanded option in the pen.

The Cubbies have spoken to the Pirates about reliever John Grabow, but Levine says a move for Zach Duke or Tom Gorzelanny "may be the right avenue to follow with the loss of Lilly." He lists Carl Pavano, Jon Garland and Doug Davis as other starters available right now.

I like duke. he's been really good this year as well as the first year he was brought up

EDIT: went back and looked, his era+ was 234 in 2005. My god, that's good

that's because he had a .296 BABIP despite a 26.4 LD%, and an 85.4 LOB%.

the short story is that duke isn't as bad as he's been in his bad years, and isn't as good as he was in 2005 and is in 2009. his BABIP is lucky this season (.280 despite a LD% of 20) and his LOB% is back up to 76. his numbers have fluctuated a lot but it's mostly been because of his defense and luck. he won't walk a whole lot of guys but is very hittable. basically he's a lefthanded jason marquis, minus a few walks. he'll eat up some innings but he's a back of the rotation guy.

I'd be interested in Pavano.

Umm, why? 5.48 ERA 1.40 Whip 134 hits in 112 innings. BAA of .300 Right hand hitters OPS'ing almost .900 against him.

He sucks

He's got an over 4 K/BB, but he's been unlucky with BABIP and home runs.

I understand how you can be unlucky with BABIP but how can you be unlucky with home runs? Wind blowing out? He hit his spots but the hitter still got it out of the park?

As Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review shows, Ian Snell has dominated Triple A hitters. Snell has said he doesn't want to return to the Pirates, so he has attracted interest as a trade chip, specifically from the Yankees.

Say what now? Snell please... buy low, Jim

So it sure sounds like the Pirates are the only team the Cubs are really dealing with. Gorz, Grabow, Duke, Sanchez... let's just take em all.

If we get Duke though, where's he gonna pitch when everyone is healthy? Are they gonna bump Wells out of the rotation?

With Harden, Lilly and Dempster all having been injured this year, I wouldn't mind a 6-man rotation if we got Duke.

Especially considering the lack of off days here on out

The Pirates are in regular contact with the Cubs.

Let's rip em off again. Sorry Jake.

Dave Littlefield works for you guys now. If anyone is gonna rip off anyone, well, that fact alone puts us in a better position.

Except Dave Littlefield is just a person in the organization, not someone who makes any decisions.

I could be wrong, but i don't remember the pirates ever ripping someone else off. They always seem to be the ones that get burned

The point is the guy who got burned here is now working for you.
