I would have happily taken him for nothing when Blanco was getting regular starts, but now that hes back to a defensive replacement role hes more valuable to the Cubs than Lugo.

YES YES YES MORE MIDDLE INFIELDERS NOMNOMNOMNOMNOM

I'm envisioning a gif of Jim Hendry actually eating middle infielders.

We don't have to be in on every guy that was so [expletive] his team outright released him.

If you want to increase your odds of finding the one who ends up decent the rest of the year you do.

Well [expletive], let's just keep any real prospects at AA and save AAA for guys who are DFAd throughout the year along with guys who are entirely out of baseball like Shea Hillenbrand, and guys who should've retired 15 years ago like Mike Stanton.

Lugo is old and supposedly can't play defense anymore. This all while being a below average offensive player for his position. He'd be about 6th on our middle infield depth chart.

And rehab. Don't forget the rehab, fake injury or real.

I always find it funny when folks are opposed to giving guys a minor league deal because there "Done". Just like how Reed Johnson and Jim Edmonds where washed up last year. Hows Andruw Jones doing this year? Not looking too shabby for a minor league deal. Lugo's hitting 284 this year 352 OBP? He's a huge upgrade over Blanco thats for sure.

The Red Sox will eat like 20 million on Lugo(remainder of 9 mil in '09, 9 mil each for '10+'11), the Jays 15 on Ryan but we cant eat the 3+ million left on Miles contract?
We are not going to admit what a mistake signing him was. Ever.

Reed Johnson was never washed up.

Jim Edmonds went off his concussion medicine.

Man, hindsight's great isn't it?

No one thought Reed Johnson was washed up. He's a serviceable backup OF the Jays didn't want to pay arbitration money to, and that's what he's been here.

People assumed Edmonds was washed up because that's what the case is for 99% of the players with his career path. Turns out there was a tangible reason for his steep decline, and there were articles and quotes about it within a month of his resurgence. Now, he's nowhere to be found.

If you chase someone who used to be okay and is now horrible because Jim Edmonds worked out when 100 other guys didn't, you're wasting resources unless there's something specific you can point to explaining why they'll be serviceable again.

Speaking of this, do think Ryan will get some of his velocity back as quickly as this year? Basically, what do you think of the move?

I don't know about his chances of getting his stuff back, with his walks and way down velocity it seems to indicate that the path to better stuff is surgery. I don't think too much of the move either way. It's a little annoying that some guys who have decent futures as relievers(Stevens, Parker, Gaub) will have fewer innings to develop, but as long as they make sure Ryan doesn't come up to the big leagues without some sort of measurable improvement in velocity, it's not a big deal. And obviously, if he pulls a Kerry Wood and magically gets better, he could help the pen.

So is foresight

Well great, and I'm sure he's missed on more then his fair share as well. Really, I'm not trying to rip on somebody - I just think it's lame to say we shouldn't look at somebody because they "flamed out with another team" - there are clearly examples of people rebounding (just as there are several examples of it not working out). If there is a legit reason for not giving Lugo the shot, then I'm open to discussing it (we have better prospects who's development will be hurt, better uses for the money, etc...). The way I see it - Lugo isn't a horrible hitter in the AL (better then Fontenot's been this season), shifting him to 2B would help with the defensive problems, and (and I'm sure people know more about this than I do, but) I'm not seeing any prospect who we would be holding back.

Even with his decent OBP, Lugo hasn't been all that great offensively this year. Considering his age and the fact that he hasn't hit well in years, I don't think he's all that likely to turn things around(and I'd bet on Fontenot to be the better hitter going forward). Also, like SSR mentioned, his defense seems to have taken a turn for the worse. Since Fontenot is a pretty good defender, Lugo has to outhit him by a significant margin to be a better option. Now, if someone wants Lugo to be the next Scales/Blanco/Baker/Miles guy to plaatoon with Fontenot, I don't think I'd be all that opposed to giving him a shot. I really doubt the team would pursue that so soon after giving up something(even if it was next to nothing) for Baker though.

Cubs, Cards & Mets Asked About Lugo

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 17 at 2:56pm CST]

The Cubs, Cardinals and Mets have shown some interest in Red Sox shortstop Julio Lugo, according to Steve Buckley of the Boston Herald. The Red Sox will have to pay all of the $13.5MM remaining on Lugo's deal if they release him, so they're likely to pick up the vast majority of the contract in any trade.

If they really want the guy, why not just wait until he clears waivers and is released and pick him up? The only way Id condone trading for Lugu is if the Red Sox take Aaron Miles of our hands, and I doubt theyd do such a foolish thing.

I really wish Hendry would see what The Royals want for Teahen instead of trying his luck on every crappy middle infielder alive.
