A very long first inning for Cashner. 30 pitches, 4 baserunners, 2 runs given up.

The positives? Even though he had a walk in the inning, 21 of the 30 pitches were strikes, he struck out 2 batters, and the three hits were 2 ground balls and a fly ball that fell in front of the LF. I'd look for him to probably settle down but likely have a short night due to the huge pitch count early.

Cashner is done.

4 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 83 pitches-55 strikes, 5 GO-2 AO

Shafer is also done.

5 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 9 GO-2 AO

Searle has pitched 5 shutout innings so far. Castro is 3 for 3 and Vitters is 2 for 3 with a double.

Josh Vitters is batting 7th for Daytona. When are they going to put him 3rd or 4th?

when he starts hitting. i know we want him to get more ABs, but there are other guys on that team (other prospects too), and i don't think it would go over well with his teammates if he gets put in the 3-hole just because he's the team's best prospect, even though he's been down around the mendoza line for a month with very little OBP or power.

Wyatt is a non prospect and is hitting in front of Vitters.

i wasn't saying that he should be hitting in front of all non-prospects; my point was that he isn't hitting and because of that, he shouldn't be in the middle of the lineup. when he starts hitting, i'm sure he'll be moved up.

Huh, he must have signed a 2008 contract.

Do you mean 2009 contract? Anyway, he played 3B and not catcher. Is that expected?

It's really, really, really, unusual to see international players playing immediately after they sign. Usually, teams wait a year before putting their guys in the DSL.

Yeah, I meant 2009.

As O_O said, most guys sign a contract for the next year - admittedly, it's mostly the 16-year olds who do that.

Ah - thanks! Good to see him get started so soon. It's now more likely that we get to see him in the states next year! Would you guys say he would have been a 2nd or 3rd rounder if he was drafted? Has anyone read if the Cubs plan to keep him at catcher (since he played 3B today)?

To be frank, the scouting reports on him are incredibly sparse. No one quite knows how he projects, much less how the Cubs will handle him.

Our friend Matt Murton is also starting in the minor league all star game.

I also saw our friend Eric Patterson playing CF late in the game.

Interesting, I missed that.

Thanks for the Contreras catch, guys. I'd seen the box but didn't even appreciate that he was who he was.

If nothing else, that confirms that they've signed him! (I hadn't ever heard an official first-hand- report on that, only that the guy had heard they had.)

I haven't heard any scouting about him. Just that they signed him, and for a 2nd-hand reported $0.8. And that he wasn't a 16-year-old.

But, he's not much older than that. He was 16 until May 17, so it's not like he's some older guy.

That he started off at 3B rather than catcher, again interesting, but who knows.

Nice to see a birthday, and a height/weight listing (6'1, 175). That seems a nice size; I'm always nervous about tall hitters.
