The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the Pirates are "pushing hard" to trade second baseman Freddy Sanchez, according to a National League executive.

The Giants and Rockies are two two interested parties that have spoken to the Pirates, but there are up to five more potential suitors, according to the executive. The 31-year-old All-Star is batting .316 with six homers and 33 RBI. If Sanchez reaches 600 plate appearances, an $8 million option for 2010 will trigger.

Fukudome and Sanchez would be outstanding at the top of the order. I'm willing to give Fontenot and Baker a shot, but I'd much rather see Sanchez.

If we only had an owner that could okay such a deal.

If the Rockies do get Sanchez, Id love to see if we could get ahold of Barmes. I dont know why they're trying to replace him personall. Id love to have his .282/.324/.482 and 10 home runs toward the end of our lineup, or even higher up. Maybe the plan is to convert Barmes to 3rd after they move Atkins, but I thought Ian Stewart was next in line for that job.Barmes is making 1.625 mil and arb eligible next season, and at that price, there will be no shortage of interst in him, so Hendry better get on the horn about him if the Rox land Sanchez. Very affordable and exactly what we need.

4:45pm: The Reds have spoken to the Rockies about Garrett Atkins, according to Troy Renck of the Denver Post. The Rockies are looking for relievers, but it will be hard to match up salaries, as Atkins makes $3.4MM before the end of the season, much more than most relievers.

I wonder if we could send them some relievers for Barmes if they land Sanchez.

-we need a middle infielder who can hit.

-we dont have a lot of money to spend

-Brames is a middle infielder who can hit.

-Barmes makes 1.6 mil for the season, which is halfway over

meh...i would rather let the fontenot/baker platoon ride the storm out at this point...

barmes is much better against lefties...so then we would just have a crazy log jam of middle infielders

this teams big weaknesses right now are starting pitching health/depth, bullpen solidness, and underperformance.

if he came to us as easily as baker...sure...but i highly doubt he would be worth it for anything much larger, he is 30 and has crappy OBP

ETA - he is also another rocky mountain high guy...terrible home/road splits...pass!

Starting pitching is not a problem.

Barmes has terrible career numbers and has only been good for about his last 700 at-bats.

His non-Coors numbers during those "good" 700 at-bats:

2008- .249/.281/.363 (.643)

2009- .266/.308/.418 (.725)

career overall- .266/.305/.418 (723)

i wouldn't be interested unless we got him for like a ptbnl later, which won't be the case. pass.

Pirates and trade winds: Freddy Sanchez(notes) was in the Pittsburgh Pirates’ lineup Friday night, putting to rest any thought that the second baseman would be traded in the next 24 hours. The Giants remain the team showing the most interest, according to one source with direct knowledge of the negotiations, while the Twins appear to be more of a long shot. There’s a third team involved from the National League Central, the source said (the Cubs?), although Sanchez’s contract, which calls for his $8 million option in 2010 to kick in automatically if he reaches 635 plate appearances this season, is giving pause to his suitors.

Well for the record Jeff Baker is terrible. I don't see why Andres Blanco doesn't just start everyday at second. With his fielding alone he probably makes up for any runs that Baker or Fontenot would produce.

brutal front office

what have they done since cleaning house to make you think they're a brutal front office?

trading sanchez is the right move for them, if they can get some value. he's 31 years old, doesn't have much power and his stats are very BABIP-dependent because he doesn't walk a lot. plus he might be in line to make $8M next season.

agreed. I actually am a big fan of what the new GM has done for the pirates. It actually looks like they are going in the right direction, FINALLY.

Right. It will be so awesome when we are all here in 2 years on a "McCutchen trade rumors" thread.

You mean like Tampa? Tampa traded off their veteran players on teams that clearly had no chance of doing anything and got players back that could help them at a later date. That later date was last year.

Guys like Navarro, Aybar, Pena, Garza, Edwin Jackson, Scott Kazmir, etc.. all became cheap talent that mixed very well with their own drafted players. They went to the World Series last year, and could very well do so again this year.

You can laugh at Pittsburgh for what appears to be a vicious circle, but at one point or another, they might have everything line up at the same time like Tampa did.

Meanwhile, the Cubs take a completely opposite approach and sign guys to contracts way past their prime, making it difficult for them to stay competitive or trade the unproductive players.

Pittsburgh has an excuse. They are a small market team. The Cubs? They are like a kid in the candy store with a $20 bill. Poof. Gone!

McCutchen will be 24 in 2 years. Why would they be looking to move him them as they are doing with the 31-year-old Sanchez now?

If we get Sanchez, our entire lineup is filled with guys that should be anywhere from above average to well above average for their positions.

Again, we have to wait for the Ricketts to take over, which reportedly could happen in the next few hours-days-weeks-months.

C'mon, do you guys really think I think McCutchen will be traded in 2 years? Half of this board is made up of people who recognize jokes (even bad ones), and the other half are people who take every written word as truth.

I was making a tongue in cheek response to someone saying Pittsburgh is "headed in the right direction". As a life-long Pennsylvanian, basically, I will believe it when I see it.

Pittsburgh hasn't had the kinds of drafts Tampa Bay did the past 6 years. Upton, Crawford, Longoria, Price, Young (turned in to Garza)... Thats a really solid base to start a team with (not even including Tim Beckham), and Pittsburgh doesn't come close to having a group like that.
