omg...

Dempster said he caught his foot on the dugout railing while jumping out of the dugout running onto the field after Sunday's win over the Brewers. He expects to miss his final two starts before the All-Star break and perhaps one more after the break. But manager Lou Piniella says he could miss three to four weeks, at least.

"It's a weird thing," Dempster said.

He said it's a non-displaced fracture and he would likely lose his toe nail.

That's so ridiculous. I wonder if the Cubs would toy with the idea of bring of Jay Jackson from Tennessee if Demps is going to be out a while. He's been outstanding in AA.

Assuming they send him down, that's unnecessarily burning an option. Between Hart, Samardzija and Marshall they have plenty of guys to choose from.

I've had enough "weird things" with this club, man.

How about just no more weird stuff this year?

Didnt Z throw like close to 120 pitches on Friday? UGH I dont like this

I understand your concern, but Z is basically having his start moved up by 18 hours. It's not that much of a difference in regards to recovery.

I'd agree with that sentiment if the Cubs didn't have any choice in the matter, but it irks me that the Cubs have some other options at their disposal and that Z could start on regular rest tomorrow. In my opinion, it's enough of a difference in terms of recovery that it's bothersome. Z's durable and a trooper, but I really am not a fan of taking risks with pitchers, even where those risks are relatively small, when other options are available.

What would you have done Sunday in that situation? Not throw Zambrano? With ASB break upcoming, I don't think it is a bad move getting him two more starts, with only one if those on short rest. I'd rather Zambrano go twice compared to the other alternatives with STL coming in.

Per The Score, according to Lou, for now, Hart will be the 5th starter, and they'll "play it by ear" from there.

Player A is one of your top prospects, expected to be a starter down the line and is pitching horribly out of the bullpen while having success as a starter.

Player B is also a prospect, but has excelled both as a starter and reliever and most likely projects as a reliever long-term.

Naturally, the Cubs go with Player B.

FanGraphs implied that Zambrano might be having some arm trouble just a couple of days ago

I think they just pointed out that his average fastball was down to like 88 and he topped out at 92.

I would have preferred Zambrano going Sunday rather than today with Samardzija or Hart going today. Depending on how the STL series went, you could have had Zambrano go on four days' rest the day before the ASB or given Z some extended time off with the break. Even if he went on four days rest against STL, the Cubs could have used the extra leeway to give Z an extra day or two off since they'd have flexibility with the rotation.

However, that's neither here nor there.

maybe i'm not reading this right (haven't had my coffee yet), but the only way Z could pitch on four days rest against STL is if he pitched last night. If we waited until today, four days rest would line him up for Monday.

i don't know if this has been posted but apparently the cubs can't retroactively disable list dempster because kevin hart is the call up for him and he was on the roster up until monday.

It doesn't matter anyway. Dempster will be out more than 15 days.

Argh, I forgot the four game series ended with a double header. #-o
