If it's true, it shows that the Cubs haven't given up on the season yet, and that they do have at least some money to make moves. That said, there are much much much much bigger problems on the Cubs than the closer.

They probably believe that Ramirez alone will come back with no issues and be the upgrade they need on offense. That's highly highly debatable of course.

Why?

The Cubs need to be able to actually score runs to have leads for the bullpen to save.

He won't cost much monetarily, so the only cost to the team would be prospects.

If Bell cost something like Wells/Thomas or something like that, we probably would still have the means to add offense - if the money's there.

Ping will be thrilled by this, I suspect.

I guess.

It's a very smart move if they still have the resources/money to make some kind of improvement to the offense, too.

That's what makes me wonder. I keep thinking we're going to have to overpay too much for a young, cheap, productive closer like Bell. If we do, the question becomes "do we have enough left to acquire an offensive player?"

I don't know the answer. If he comes at a reasonable cost, though, it'd be a good move.

Bell is 31 years old

In that thread it talks about Wells for Bell and putting Shark into the rotation. I guess that would make some sense with Shark called up today at least along the line of thinking by the Cubs to make sure Shark isn't used in AAA anymore incase he is needed to start. Marshall should be starting in that situation, but you know Lou needs his LOOGY.

Also does that website have any cred? Also anyone else see that "tweet" that reported a deal was close?

Crap. I keep forgetting that for some reason. It seems like he's so much younger.

Even still, a cheap, productive pitcher with the closer tag very well may cost more than he ought to.

If Shark gets a spot in the rotation and Marshall stays in loogy duty, Marshall goes on a killing spree. book it.

I just hope we dont end up giving the Padres everything of ours that they want in this deal and we have nothing left for them in the off season if the Peavy talks are to resume.

So we trade a cheap very effective pitcher for Heath Bell? I like Bell, but moves like that don't make for long term success.

Wells for Bell straight up would be a good trade, I think. It's unlikely Wells will keep up this level of production and, if he doesn't, we won't be able to get this much for him when/if he regresses.

Thus, trade him at his highest value for a proven productive closer who is very cheap this year and will probably still be fairly inexpensive next year. The only problem is, the Padres will likely consider all that and ask for more than just Wells for him.

But we are in a "win now" mode and out window is maybe through 2011. We are dealing from a strength (rotation) to probably our second biggest weakness (bullpen) while our rotation should remain solid especially if Z and Dempster pick it up a little.

I like the move, but Hendry will probably have to overpay, Bell is a "Closer" and has a lot of "Saves" and a ERA under 2.00 (even though he has pitched like 32 innings). Now if Marmol can figure his ish out a 7-8-9 of Guzman-Marmol-Bell is looking awfully nice and now Gregg/Ascanio/Heilman/Patton won't need to pitching in too many late inning meaningful games.

If this trade is so close, why hasnt MLBTR, which picks up every little rumor or proposal gotten ahold of it?

Not all trades go through a heavy rumor cycle before happening. But it's probably not a legit rumor.

Yeah, I have trouble believing that after uncermoniously dumping Trevor Hoffman theyd go ahead and trade his heir apparent whose under team control for 2 more years.

He's 31, by the time the Padres will be a competitive team again he will at least be in his mid 30's/close to 40. Might as well trade him now and come close to maximizing his value. This would be a Moneyball like move, find a closer build up value and trade him when the market over values him, isn't Depodesta (sp?) with the Padres?

He'd be a good addition to a shaky bullpen, but this move makes no sense without a bat. When you're bottom 26th in runs scored and 6th in runs allowed, your needs are kind of obvious.

i guess i could see a trade for bell and then a one for teahan

that is my guess for the deadline

i believe kansas city mark is coming our way and i believe a bullpen arm is as well...i just don't know which one

I think everybody, for once, is in agreement with this statement.

Am I the only one who wouldn't trade Wells for Bell straight up? I know Bell is good, and I realize that Wells is going to come back down to earth some, but the fact is good starting pitchers are harder to come by than good relievers. Wells hasn't show me any reason why he wouldn't continue to be a very good #5 starter. If we're going to get a bullpen arm, I much rather go after someone like Feliciano who would cost a little less and is more of an 8th inning guy that could give Marmol a break. Kevin Gregg hasn't been as bad as some people think.
