this is depressing, all the players from my childhood have kids who are becoming prospects. i'm old. :x

That was my thought as soon as I found out that Doug Drabek had an almost major league ready kid.

Just wait until how old you feel when Kyle Drabek pitches to Scott Van Slyke (of the Dodgers). And with Sid Bream's son already in college (Tyler), time is really flying.

ESPN recently put up a Top pitchers in the draft class preview, with some scouting reports on each guy. Here's the link...

http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/blog?name=mlb_draft&id=5052589

Can't put it all, but I'll put the list:

1. Jameson Taillon, RHP -- The Woodlands HS

2. A.J. Cole, RHP -- Oviedo HS (Fla.)

3. Karsten Whitson, RHP -- Chipley HS (Fla.)

4. Anthony Ranaudo, RHP -- LSU

5. Deck McGuire, RHP -- Georgia Tech

6. Kevin Gausman, RHP -- Grandview HS (Col.)

7. Adam Plutko, RHP -- Glendora HS (Calif.)

8. Dylan Covey, RHP -- Maranatha HS (Calif.)

9. Drew Pomeranz, LHP -- Mississippi

10. Griffin Murphy, LHP -- Redlands East Valley HS (Calif.)

Note: I left James Paxton (Kentucky) off because he's not likely to pitch until late this month at the earliest. Sale, who fanned 14 over eight innings versus Mercer, lost out to Pomeranz, but would likely be the next name if the list continued, followed by Kaleb Cowart of Cook HS (Ga.) -- who has the stuff and projectability to move well into the upper half of these rankings. Right-hander Stetson Allie, a two-way player from St. Edward HS (Ohio) and Tyrell Jenkins from Henderson HS (Texas) could make moves this spring, too.

Covey pitches 5 minutes from me and Plutko about 15. I really should check them out but I feel weird going to see a HS baseball game unless it's at my old HS.

I'm just glad Jamie Moyer is still playing. There's still hope for me!

I'd like to see the Cubs go after a guy who has ace potential. In fact, I'd probably go as far as to say I'd like to see us take pitching early and often. If not, i guess I'd like to see a power hitting OFer taken early. Our middle infield looks really good throughout the minors and I wouldn't want to see us spend a 1st rounder on a corner guy, with Vitters likely to wind up at either 1st or 3rd longterm for us.

Mainly though, I'd really like to see Ricketts give the OK to overslot early and often. Our system is definitely on the right track as it is, but getting some hard to sign guys could be huge for us. Given how Ricketts has said he wants to build through the draft, I'm at least optimistic that this could happen......

There's a kid at my son's high school that is amazing (Minooka Community High School, Minooka, IL). Had 23 scouts at the home opener a couple of weeks ago. He's committed to Texas, but we'll see. He throws mid-90's and can HIT, too. Has had back to back two-three run homer games already. Name is Mike Foltynewicz. Looking forward to seeing where he goes and how he does. Been watching him play since he was 11, and he's always been a standout.

In the preseason, BA had him as the #63 HS Sr. in the country.

He's definitely higher than that at this point from the buzz he has rec'd.

No one can believe he's that low. It's cool watching someone your kid played with come to this point.

Draft Details per BA's Draft Blog:

Major League Baseball announced the official plans today for coverage of the 2010 Draft. This year's draft takes place June 7-9. For the second-consecutive year, the first day will be a prime time event with MLB Network again hosting the first day of the draft, beginning at 7 p.m. ET.

Prior to the start of the Draft on June 7, MLB Network will air a Draft preview show, also simulcast on MLB.com, with Greg Amsinger, Harold Reynolds, John Hart, Peter Gammons, Jonathan Mayo and Baseball America executive editor Jim Callis at 6:00 p.m. ET.

Last year, the first night covered the first three rounds of the draft, but this year it will only cover the first round and supplemental first round. Teams will have five minutes to make their selection in the first round and then one minute per pick for the supplemental round.

The draft will resume at noon ET on both Tuesday, June 8 (for rounds 2-30) and Wednesday, June 9 (for rounds 31-50) via conference call from MLB headquarters in New York City.

Andy Seiler's fifth and most recent mock draft: http://www.mlbbonusbaby.com/2010/4/27/1446476/mock-draft-5-first-round

16. Chicago Cubs - Matt Harvey, RHP, North Carolina - I didn't like that Harvey threw so many pitches on Friday, but he at least showed that he has the arsenal and durability to throw that many pitches and still be effective at the end of nine innings. The Cubs generally like powerful collegiate arms when they go in the direction of pitching, and this could be a solid fit if there's a compromise to be struck with Scott Boras. Previously: #25.

In previous versions of his mock draft, he's had:

4/14/2010 - Jesse Hahn, RHP, Virginia Tech

3/22/2010 - Jesse Hahn, RHP, Virginia Tech

1/15/2010 - Drew Pomeranz, LHP, Ole Miss

10/5/2009 - Stetson Allie, RHP, St. Edwards HS (OH)

I like the 1/15 choice. :)

Not sure where Zack Cox will end up in the draft, but I'd love to see the Cubs get him. I think he'd be a pretty fast burner and could solve the second base hole that we've had for some time. The dude can flat out rake.

We've already got a slew of guys to fill that "hole".

I really like Cox, but I don't see him making it to the Cubs. He should be a quality player at 2B or 3B, has pretty good tools across the board, should move fast through the minors, and reportedly will be easy to sign. He makes sense for the Cubs as an up the middle college player from a big school in a strong conference. However, in a year bereft of good college position players, Cox seems like a lock for the Top 10. Heck, the Pirates might consider snagging him at #2 overall if they want a repeat of last year's draft.

On a related note, Jesse Hahn apparently has had forearm stiffness and shoulder issues. An MRI on his shoulder came back negative, but still, eek. I was thinking he could be a good choice for the Cubs in the first round...but not any more.

His latest was posted today.

16. Chicago Cubs - Brett Eibner, RHP, Arkansas - Eibner has become a sneaky prospect this year, and his stock has risen accordingly. As a two-way player with upside on both sides of the ball, I think a team that values athleticism at the pitching position could call Eibner's name earlier than expected. The Cubs fit that mold, but they'll have plenty of choices in this position.

That pick makes a ton of sense, too.

How have the Cubs had a hole at second base for "some time"? While it might not be the same player every year, they've had decent production from the position relative to the rest of the league for the past decade. Only twice in the past 10 years have the Cubs received below average production* from second base: 2001 and 2009.

*This is production measured against other second basemen, not against all offensive players.

Wrigley Bound profiled pitchers and hitters the Cubs might target in the draft. I don't agree with everything the author says about the Cubs, but the profiles are well done and they should give you people a good idea of the kinds of players the Cubs will be looking at with the #16 pick.
