Toronto Sun"]National junior team shortstop Wes Darvill of Langley, B.C., was the first Canadian taken yesterday. He was chosen in the fifth round by the Chicago Cubs. Former Blue Jays scouting director Tim Wilken, now with the Cubs, saw Darvill go 3-for-3, including a triple and two steals, against Cubs minor-leaguers when the Langley Blaze were in Arizona in March.

39th rounder: Nicholas Struck, RHP, Mt. Hood CC

5'11, 185 lbs. 10/7/1989.

Clackamas Review"]Struck made the NWAACC first team of all-stars as pitcher; Davis made the conference’s second all-star team as a catcher. Both played for Mt. Hood Community College during the past season.

Stuck had an 8-0 record and a 1.10 ERA on the regular season. Struck recorded 49 strikeouts in 49 innings, while giving up 26 hits and 11 walks.

40th rounder: Eric Whaley, RHP, Cardinal Gibbons HS (Pompano Beach, FL)

6'3 / 175 lbs. 7/27/1990.

BA rated him the 76th best prospect in Florida.

Real Baseball Intelligence"]Strengths:

Whaley's pro body and emerging stuff have put him on scouts' radar. At 6-foot-3, Whaley has good size and strong mechanics. He throws a high 80s fastball that has room to grow, which he pairs with a good changeup and decent slurve.

Weaknesses:

Like many high school pitchers, Whaley would stand to improve his command. His stuff isn't yet comparable to the elite high school pitchers in the draft.

The Future:

How high Whaley gets drafted depends on how patient a team wants to be with him. Whaley could be a beast after three years at Miami; when he gets stronger, his fastball velocity should sit in the low 90s. He could get plucked as high as the tenth round in 2009.

There's an embedded video of him in that link.

42nd round: Trey Ford, SS/3B, Chaparral HS (Scottsdale, AZ)

6'2, 200 lbs. 7/25/1990.

Third baseman Trey Ford has a short, line-drive stroke but profiles better at second base. He is committed to Chandler-Gilbert next year...

BA has him as the 52nd best prospect in Arizona.

ITI has a premium story on LaMaheiu. Here are the highlights:

‘This kid is really going to hit in pro ball,’” Mainieri recalled. “‘You get him with the right hitting coach, they’re going to teach him how to pull the ball and I think he’s going to have power.’”

“I really have enjoyed watching him the past year,” Wilken said. “I’m pretty excited about it and I still think there’s some projection for added physical strength and possibly another given step in his speed, agility and bounce.”

They really think he's going to add power as he grows. That first paragraph is what Hendry told Mainieri.

I assume this kid will be a tough sign since hes going to Miami, and projects to get drafted alot higher in a few years correct?

I read that first quote and it makes me happy we have Von Joshua. Too bad it will be awhile before he seems him.

Probably.

Last year, the Cubs took Anthony Zych in the 46th round (St. Rita HS in Chicago) and he wanted 5th round money. He's now at Louisville. The Cubs also took Hunter Scantling in the 49th round from a high school in Jacksonville. He wanted first round money and is instead at FSU.

Neither of them graded out near the bonus money they wanted but projected to be drafted much higher in 3 years.

48th rounder: John Nasshan, RHP, Niles West HS (Skokie, IL)

6'4 190, 7/13/1991

He's committed to Bradley.

BradleyBraves.com"]Standing 6-feet, 6-inches, Nasshan resembles the successful, prototypical pitchers of the past at Bradley. Team captain and most valuable player as a junior last spring, Nasshan went 4-1 in seven mound appearances with a 3.00 earned run average. He struck out 46 hitters in his 44 innings pitched with just six walks. He also hit .478 last spring, helping him earn all-conference honors. He also was invited to the TPX Perfect Game and the Northwestern Suburban Showcase at Stevenson High School.

A product of the same summer program that produced Christian Friedrich, the All-American pitcher and first-round Major League Baseball selection who played for Dominguez and Corbin at Eastern Kentucky, Nasshan pitched for the Lakeside Cardinals this past summer. He is currently rated as the No. 84 player in the state of Illinois by Prep Baseball Report.

In addition to his work on the diamond, Nasshan has been a four-year letterman in golf at Niles West High School, earning team captain, team MVP and all-conference honors during his junior year.

“John is a very projectable pitcher who currently throws in the mid-80’s, but who could potentially end up being a power pitcher during his days as a Bradley Brave,” said Bradley Baseball head coach Elvis Dominguez. “With added strength, John’s future is very bright.”

49th rounder: Christian Segar, OF, McQuaid Jesuit HS (Rochester, NY)

6'1 185. 4/27/1991

Also committed to Bradley.

BradleyBraves.com"]Segar is one of the fastest baseball players in the Northeast and is routinely timed in the 6.45-6.6 range in the 60. While a hamstring injury limited his playing time last spring, Segar hit .500 with three homeruns in the seven games he was able to play. Despite the injury, he was invited to play in the prestigious Empire State Games and represented the Western Region as the team’s centerfielder.

Segar also puts his speed to work on the track, where he is an all-conference performer. He was the Section V champion in the 300 meters and helped his 4 x 200-meter relay team to the section title. He also placed fourth in the 55 meters last year.

“Christian is extremely unique in that he possesses game-changing tools,” said Bradley Baseball head coach Elvis Dominguez. “We are excited to see what he will accomplish when he is 100 percent healthy this spring. We also are looking forward to see him run down fly balls in spacious O’Brien Field, where he will no doubt play an important role in helping us win games."

50th rounder: Zach Cleveland, RHP, Central Arizona JC

6'1. 3/5/1989.

BA rated him the 24th best prospect in Arizona this year. When he came out of high school in Colorado in 2007, Cleveland was rated as the 8th best prospect in Colorado by BA. He was a 35th round selection of the Phillies in 2007.

Short righthander Zach Cleveland has a fastball that tops out at 93 mph and sits 90-92, setting up a devastating slider. He had trouble throwing strikes last year for the Vaqueros, but cut down his free passes this season.

Jay Taylor (San Francisco): Is there anything for a Cubs fan to be happy about in this year's draft?

Kevin Goldstein: Look, Brett Jackson is not a bad pick. Lots of athleticism, great effort, and he has to curb the strikeouts. You can't get a perfect player at 31. I have very little understanding or love for the LeMahieu pick in the second . . . AT ALL, and most of the pitchers they took later are more pitchability types than arm-strength types. It's not a thrilling list.

He could have really just said NO and saved alot of effort.

Round 32, Kenneth McNutt, RHP, Shelton State Community College, Ala.: Named to the All-Region 22 first team in a vote by the Alabama Community College Conference baseball coaches. Helped Shelton State reach the JUCO World Series. At 6-foot-4, 205 pounds, he just finished his freshman season. Shelton State coach Bobby Sprowl expected the youngster to be picked because McNutt's fastball has been clocked at 95 mph.

Round 40, Eric Whaley, RHP, Cardinal Gibbons (Fla.) High School: The junior is 6-foot 3-inches and 180 pounds, and according to scouting reports, his size and strong mechanics put him on scouts' radars. Throws fastball, changeup and slurve.

Round 44, Frank DeJiulio, RHP, Daytona Beach Community College: A 6-foot-3 pitcher, he had a tough time his first year at Daytona Beach, battling an illness but still managed to go 6-4 with a 5.27 ERA. He's been contacted by some elite Division I college programs such as Florida and Mississippi State. His father is a former pro player, Frank DeJiulio Sr.

DeJiulio is said to be asking for major over slot money.

Round 45, Addison Dunn, RHP, Warren Area (Pa.) High School: He has committed to Kent State to play Division I baseball. His fastball has been clocked in the low 90s and as high as 93 mph at showcases for college coaches and scouts. He led Warren in batting last year, hitting .547.

46th rounder Glenn Cook used to play linebacker for the Canes.
