Nothing too interesting really.

Rusin throws a 4-seam, 2-seam, cutter, curve and change and he uses all his pitches.

Darvil thinks he'll get a shot at shortstop first. He has line drive power but doesn't have HR power yet, but he hopes in time he can get stronger and elevate the ball more.

The Brett Jackson story is the same one I linked earlier in this thread.

Carrie Muskat[/url]"]6/16 CWS update

DJ LeMahieu had three hits and scored two runs in LSU's 9-1 win over Arkansas in the College World Series Monday night in Omaha. LeMahieu, the Cubs' second-round pick in the June Draft, also stole a base. LSU will play the winner of the Arkansas-Virginia game, which will be played Wednesday. The Tigers next game will be Friday.

He also looked very good with the glove and showed an above average arm at 2nd.

I have a feeling the Cubs will try to move D.J. back to short, at least initially.

You might be right, just look at Flaherty last year (though Flaherty was at SS throughout his time in college).

I would hope so. A second round draft pick on a 2B just doesn't seem like good value. I know there is thought he might be moved to 3B as well, but Vitters will be blocking him every step of the way (LeMathieu would have to jump over Vitters in all likelihood due to his age).

Article on Nasshan

That's when he got the most pleasant of surprises. Chicago Cubs scout Stan Zielinski revealed the organization had selected Nasshan in the 48th round (1,460th pick) of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

The 6-foot-6, 190-pound righty, who has committed to play at Bradley, said he had not been expecting to have his name called in the draft.

"It's just incredible. It's been a dream my entire life and I didn't think it was coming this early," said Nasshan, who admitted he attended more White Sox games than Cubs games as a youngster but said he likes both Chicago teams.

Nasshan apparently came to the Cubs' attention when general manager Jim Hendry watched him pitch in a game during his junior season. Hendry actually recommended the pitcher to the coaching staff at Bradley.

Nasshan said he's unlikely to find himself pitching in the Cubs organization any time soon, if ever.

"I'm pretty sure I'm going to Bradley," said Nasshan, who went 10-1 with a 2.21 ERA this spring for the Wolves (28-8). He also had 60 strikeouts in 52 innings pitched.

Yeah, he really looked like a SS playing 2nd the other night. I think LSU just has an even better defensive SS playing right now, but I bet DJ could still handle the position.

Exciting to hear about the first few signees! I'm would like to say that I'm a little excited about The Rohan signing, but because of his age (23) I'm really not. I just wanted to say, "The Rohan."

43rd Rounder Colin Kaepernick is staying at QB for Nevada:

But last week, he was given the opportunity to get back into that other sport after the Chicago Cubs picked him in the 43rd round of the Major League Baseball's first-year player draft. The offer was flattering but Kaepernick is sticking with football.

He's the starting quarterback for the Wolf Pack, a team that enjoys his quick speed and deadly arm in their spread offense. He amassed nearly 4,000 yards and 39 touchdowns last fall. And with him back next season, Nevada is expected again to be a serious contender for the Western Athletic Conference crown.

. . .

Baseball scouts know what Kaepernick can do on the mound. He can throw a fastball above the 90-mph mark and his 6-foot-6 frame is very appealing. He earned all-Stanislaus District honors in 2006 after setting a school-record tying nine wins during his 9-2 senior season with a 1.27 ERA while helping guide the Pride to the Sac-Joaquin Section title game against Elk Grove High.

What's the slot for Jackson? How much would we give him? How much over slot would be give guys like DJ and Raley?

Slot is supposed to be cut by 10% this year but we'll see if that actually happens.

Last year's 31st pick (Shooter Hunt) received $1,080,000. Last year's 79th pick (Jordy Mercer) got $508,000. Both were in line with slot for 2008. The average 6th rounder got about $150,000 last year.

I'd suspect Jackson gets slot. LeMahieu is a sophomore with extra leverage so he'll probably need more than $500,000 - maybe $700,000? No clue on Raley, he was rated about as high as LaMahieu per BA - about a top 80 pick - but as a draft eligible sophomore who went lower than where he'd expect, not only will he want well over 6th round slot, he'll probably sign for more than LaMaheieu. Both LaMahieu and Raley could easily be first rounders next year if they make solid improvements (or LaMahieu returns to his freshman form).

did anyone really have him as a prospect warranting that kind of money? i'm sure he would've been picked higher if not for his bonus demands, but i highly doubt he will get high six figures.

I guess he was top-10 round worthy if teams were calling him then.

He's going to have to do well in the Cape Cod League to get a top-10 round offer. It will be surprising if the Cubs go top 5 (though they did that with Logan Watkins who had little hype pre-draft from the media).

We'll see how he feels when August rolls around, but he's in for a shock if he really thinks he won't lose any bargaining leverage if he returns for his senior year. He's no Matt LaPorta.

Wilken on the Cubs picks (premium).

The highlights:

Darvill should stick at SS, compared to Brignac.

Raley drafted as a P. Will be followed on Team USA through the summer.

Springfield could play OF or IF. Played SS in high school but CF on his travel team. Had good success with the wooden bat.

Whitenack still has some projectability left in him.

I'll get to the rest later.

Thanks, cal. Nice to know which way they are thinking with Raley.

That they will "follow" is slightly disappointing, IMO. I'd hoped that they'd drafted him knowing what his bonus expectations were and knowing that they were willing to meet them. The idea about following him this summer suggests otherwise.

This is becoming a running theme for this team...

So no, the former New Palestine High School standout has not signed with the Chicago Cubs after being selected in the 31st round (950th overall) of the major league draft.

"By the end of the summer, the Cubs will make an offer," said Clark, who plans to leave in the next couple of days to play in the Cape Cod summer collegiate league in Massachusetts.

"If it's what I want, I'll sign. If it's not, I'll go back to school (at the University of Louisville) and play my senior year."

. . .

But he didn't sound disappointed in the least about this year's selection. He said the Cubs will watch him closely this summer. If they come away impressed, it is his understanding they will offer a signing bonus higher than what is usually awarded to a low-round draft choice.

Clark declined to specify what amount would get him to sign but said he is looking for money typical of a high-round selection. He said he also isn't concerned that returning to Louisville for a senior year might limit his bargaining power if he goes through the draft again next June.

Blurb on Walt Jocketty's son:

NEWS ITEM: The Cubs took Ladue High third baseman Joe Jocketty, son of Walt Jocketty, former Cardinals general manager and now Cincinnati general manager, in the 47th round of the recent amateur draft.

HUMMEL'S TAKE: What's this? The hated rival Cubs taking a Jocketty? Actually, Jocketty and Cubs general manager Jim Hendry are very close. "Jim's always been very fond of Joe, and he told me two years ago he was going to draft him when he graduated from high school," Jocketty said. "He's a man of his word.

"He even called Joe afterward. How many draft picks (especially a 47th rounder) ever get a call from the general manager? Jim's a dear friend."

Hendry told Jocketty that when he graduated from college -- Joe will walk on to the baseball team at Miami of Ohio -- that the Cubs would be happy to draft him again.

Soooo, JH is assuming he'll still be here to draft him 3 or 4 years hence.....
