Personally, I think this is much ado about nothing. Tallon wasn't trying to screw players, and it is clearly wasn't malicious. This was a honest to god mistake by the organization, and I believe NHL isn't going to severely punish the Hawks for a clerical mistake.

They've busted others for clerical mistakes. The NFL busted the Bears on a clerical mistake. It's a simple procedure that everybody gets right most of the time. Why did these idiots send this in normal mail? Is that where they are cutting costs?

Consider the fact that the NHL finished their investigation without punishment bodes well for the Hawks. I think the NHLPA will drop the issue if Versteeg and/or Barker are signed to nice deals (not market setting deal, but a deal with a significant bump in pay) or dealt to team(s) who can give the two players nice contracts.

I could part with Versteeg, but Barker would hurt. We'll see. Guess the Hawks aren't 100% confident in their position on this.

P.S. I can't wait for hockey season to start.

But Barker for over 3m? Shouldn't have gotten a nickel over 2.5.

I wonder if the Hawks did this to appease the NHLPA?

Versteeg likely a goner?

You're probably looking at at least $4M if you want to take him away with an offersheet. Hawks would likely match anything less. In terms of a regular trade, the Hawks would probably have their eye on young talent that is about one year away from having an impact in the NHL (then again, who isn't)

I like Versteeg, but he is not a $4 million dollar player right now. He's more of a $1.5-$2 mill player. If some team wants to offer $4 mill for him, then....bye-bye Kris.

It would suck, but I don't think it's the end of the world if we lose Versteeg. Good young player, but if that's the worst we suffer, we should still be a very good hockey team.

Very, very glad we resigned Barker.

Why? To that contract? Way overpriced. This starts to negate the positives of how favorable Hossa's deal is. Freaking morons. Knowing how tight the cap situation was going to become, how the heck do you put yourself in this position?

The fact that it's not the end of the world is meaningless. If they are going to lose him it's going to be strictly based on managerial incompotence, not because "thems the breaks and another team wanted to pay more." This would be a huge blow. Losing good young talent for absolutely nothing isn't something you just shrug off.

if a team offered 4m for versteeg the blackhawks would get a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round pick in return. that's a great return for someone who i'm guessing would struggle to net a first rounder in a trade straight up.

So unrestricted free agents net compensation when signed?

Just trying to see anything positive in what is obviously not a good situation.

That sounds like restricted though, not unrestricted.

Depends how the NHLPA handles things...

We know how they handled it, the NHLPA filed a grievance. An arbitrator will decide. The fact that they paid Barker more than he should have gotten if he was still really just a RFA leads me to believe the Blackhawks think Versteeg has a great case and will likely become an UFA. As an UFA, I don't think the Blackhawks would be due any compensation if Versteeg signed elsewhere. That would be a huge loss.

I'm pretty sure Barker would have gotten that much, at minimum, as an RFA.
