A 1,2,3 for Gregg. I don't recall that happening before.

It might be one of those LaTroy Hawkins kinds of things where Gregg is really unreliable when given a one run lead, but when he has more than a one run lead, he does very well.

He's done it in 3 of his last 4 games

edit: actually, just two of 4

I heard Scales homered. I love his story. Sticking around for 11 years in the minors just so he could possibly know what it was like to play in the Majors some day. How many times he must have daydreamed about his first big-league HR.

Good for you, Mickey. I hope you never forget tonight.

Wow. I can't believe this team is 4 games over .500 and 1.5 out of first place.

The projected 3-4 and 6 hitters had respective OPS's before tonight of .649, .644, and .492, and have missed a total of about 25 games. The team's best hitter has missed 13 games already. And it's not like the role players have been out of their minds. Fontenot has been mediocre. Miles bad. Reed Johnson no where close to last year. Hoffpauir is doing about what was expected with extended playing time.

And it's not like the pitching is carrying them. Coming into this game the 2 best starters from a year ago had ERAs of 4.83 and 4.98. Zambrano wasn't doing much better at 4.50 and is on the DL. The bullpen hasn't really taken control and dominated either, as the back 3 of the pen all had ERAs over 4 and WHIPs of 1.63, 1.60, and 1.53. Patton, Samardzija, Cotts, and Fox also have combined to give up 24 ERs in less than 23 innings.

This team is going to be in very good shape when they get healthy and their great players start playing like they should.

Hats off to Fukudome, Marshall and Guzman who have all stepped up and performed at the top of their respective groups (offense, SP, RP).

Especially considering his roller coaster ride to get here the past few weeks. First hes flown to Chicago to learn that hes going back. Then He gets up and does OK for himself. Then in comes Freel, and its apparently the end of the line for him. Then down goes Ramirez and he stays some more. Seriosuly between Scales and Freel, they need to shop Miles.

I was talking with one of my friends yesterday and said something similar about it being pretty impressive that the Cubs are a few games over .500 with the injuries and poor play they've gotten from guys who were expected to contribute.

Hopefully they can get healthy/start hitting soon.

If Miles is going to leave the Cubs, it will be by a DFA rather than a trade.

How many organizations has Scales been in, anyway?

We should have offered up to Oakland whose entire infield pretty much went down at once. Hes really no worse than Adam Kennedy.

4. He spent 6 in the Pads, 1 each with the Phils and Red Sox and then us.

Between him and Hoff, it just goes to show that in future off season we need to start trusting our farm system more, at least for role players rather than going out and making pointless aquisitions like Miles and Gathright.

Agreed. Paying Miles $4.5 million is ridiculous when you should be able to find that kind of production in your farm system. If a guy like Scales doesn't work out, you can just send them back down and try another one. If Miles doesn't work out, you're stuck paying him.

Especially when there are guys like Ray Durhan and Mark Grudzielanek available in FA still and a guy like Ryan Freel/Adam Kennedy can be had for a little more than a bag of balls and a bat.

Why bother shopping him? We ate Vizcaino's contract, just DFA him and if no one takes eat his contract too
