Bring up Jake Fox and Jeff Stevens

Can we stop with the Stevens love? They guy has walked 7 guys in 13 innings, why do you think Lou wants another guy with command issues in the pen?

I know I can deal with a few more walks than ideal if he can do even half as well as his current .089 BAA. His walk rate has been fine in his 300+ innings prior to this year, I don't think his first 14 IP this year are enough to make me think he's a wildman now.

I cringe when I say this, but...

A sudden increase in wildness is often a sign of an impending injury in a pitcher.

We're still talking about 14 IP, and 7 BB in 14 IP isn't so horrible that an injury is all that more likely than it being a fluke/variance.

True - just feeling negative today. :)

Why was I thinking he had control problems in the past? Is it 1 of the other guys we got from Cleve in that trade?

The other two guys, Gaub and Archer, are both much worse with control.

in that case we should prepare for our entire bullpen to blow out their arms soon.

Honestly, I'm sad to see things end like that. I was really rooting for Fox to make a comeback... he had been pretty awesome in the past. And the way our bullpen has been, it would have been really nice to have the "old" Chad Fox in there to hold down the 7th inning.

I really do not remember that Chad Fox.

He never made an appearance with us, but in 2003 he had a 141 ERA+ (38 games) and in 2001 he had a 228 ERA+ (65 games).

Okay. Thought I missed those years with the Cubs.

However, can't one basically find those same stats with just about every veteran reliever to play the game?

Mel Rojas posted a 243 and a 142 OPS+ in a couple of different seasons.

He's a pretty good hitter.

You're thinking of Kookie Rojas or whatever his name was.

Definitely. Fox is the very definition of an inconsistent reliever. He had those terrific years I mentioned, and then mixed in years of a 70, 104 and 108 ERA+. His rookie year with Atlanta he had a 127 ERA+.

Octavio Victor Rojas, according to baseball-reference. His nickname was Cookie. He was primarily a 2Bman and finished with a career 83 OPS+.

Mel Rojas had a -32 career OPS+. Though he did OPS .875 in 1996 with Montreal. In 8 plate appearances.

Oh, I get it now. I couldn't understand Goony's response. But, I put OPS instead of ERA. Haha. Yeah, he is a pretty good hitter.

Haha, I didn't even realize that until you pointed it out. I was trying to figure out what goony was talking about . . .

Cookie played for the Phillies along with shortstop Bobby Wine. Togerther, they were a great double play combo, although neither could hit. In fact, in Philadelphia, they marveled at "the plays of Wine and Rojas" !! Hey, didn't they make a movie by that name ????

You'd know better than I would. I wasn't even alive then.

I remember Steve Stone talking about the days of Wine and Rojas.

That was back in the days when good field, no hit shortstops were considered fine. I remember Mark Belanger and Eddie Brinkman as a couple of Wine's contemporaries.
