Better still, Hendry should never have traded DeRosa in the first place. Problem solved before it even becomes a problem.

What's done is done, but this may be the most inexplicable move Hendry has made in his tenure.

Not at all. Quite a few people recognized that trading DeRosa could be a good move well before he made it.

Unfortunately, he didn't get a great return... and he completely bungled his follow-thru.

True, it didn't look as bad at the time as it does now. But when you see what has gone on at 3B over the past week, what Aaron Miles has done and watched Hoffpauir play the OF, man, does it look bad. It just cries out for a guy like DeRo.

Selling high is always a good idea, but jeezus.

At the time I was supporting the idea of trading, I was supporting it while retaining Cedeno to play a legit SS, and picking up a bargain bin 3B backup like Russell Branyan.

And I was supporting using DeRosa as a key piece in a larger deal, like for Peavy or Beltran.

Yeah, I think a lot of us were. The problem is that Hendry played the rest of the scenario out about as poorly as possible. My initial opinion of the trade has been replaced by irritation over what it led to, which really ended up being less than nothing.

Look on the bright side, Fonte is hitting .232/.338/.449/.787 which could probably be improved upon when he settles into a his .280ish batting average ways, though he probably won't be having a .220 IsoP all season long. He is on pace for 31 homers.

Trading DeRosa has yet to hurt this team and it probably won't.

The fact that Aaron Miles has been in the starting lineup for he last week would suggest otherwise. Has it devestated us? Not so much, but it has hurt.

That really isn't true. DeRosa would have been playing RF because Bradley is out (if we were even able to sign him) and you probably would have a combination of Miles and Johnson depending on the day, which is equally suck to what we have now when Hoff was out there. Were we worse off for a few games? Yes, but it really didn't hurt us.

DeRosa would have been playing third while Aramis and Bradley were both out, and Miles would probably have been nowhere near the team.

and neither would bradley...

Nonsense. DeRosa's money was not the difference maker.

the couple million difference between DeRosa and Miles this year could have been made up in a slightly different contract structure with Bradley. With both Miles and DeRosa off the 2010 books, they'd have had $2+m to factor into next year's payroll budget.

okay so youre saying he traded derosa for miles and three minor league p's?

because he's not that dumb.

Well he did it. The money is relatively close to even. The goal was to get more LH, and the only RH bat that was replaced with a new LH bat coming in was DeRosa's.

no it's not. derosa is making $3.3M more than miles this season.

I know that I've posted this in another thread concerning this argument in the past month or so.

Assuming we still are in agreement that Bruce knows more than any of us - it seems pretty clear to me.

The issue was/is they could've have cleared up money for Bradley in other ways. Non-tendering Gaudin/not signing the utterly contemptible Aaron Miles brings to you within ~1.5M. Failing that, the combo of no Kevin Gregg and Aaron Miles would have actually cost less than keeping DeRosa + Wuertz. It was typical focus on what a guy doesn't do by Hendry, and as usual he kept that tunnel vision going all offseason.
