Yes, what a jerk for him wanting to stand up for himself on principle.

Sure, I would've preferred he take the suspension while he was hurt, too, but give me a break.

as Sandberg said, "the name on the front is a lot more important than the name on the back" Screw principle, if you can help the team by taking a suspension when it wouldnt matter instead of possibly taking one when it would, you do it.

Sandberg was scared to get either name dirty.

Says the guy who ditched his team because his wife was a slut and then came back a hell of a lot worse.

He would be helping the team more if he stopped being hurt and hit the ball a little more often.

Did you see the at bat that got him suspended? Ridiculous calls by the umpire. The whole team should have gotten themselves kicked out for those called strikes. The league should review the tapes and fine and suspend the umpire for making such horrible calls.

I'm at least a little disappointed Lou didn't go out there and put up a fight for his player.

The thing about that is it happened so quick, there was barely any time for Lou to do anything. It was called strike three, Bradley yells, ump throws him out, next batter.

This is obnoxious. Just argument for the sake of argument.

From the standpoint of Bradley getting the boot, I agree. It was too quick. However, Milton ends up being hung out to dry a little bit by being the only one putting up the fight.

If Lou is out there, now Bradley has a little more support. Instead, it just looks like Milton being Milton. And this is an actual complaint Milton had every right to make, IMO.

If Lou goes out to argue balls and strikes he gets tossed and quite possibly suspended.

is Trammel likely to fill out a better lineup card than Lou?

I'm sorry, but fans who whine about a guy appealling a suspension are

just completely irrational

not irrational. there's no logical contradiction involved in saying that Bradley should drop the

appeal. the argument is this:

Screw principle, if you can help the team by taking a suspension when it wouldnt

matter instead of possibly taking one when it would, you do it.

whether or not it's correct, it's certainly coherent. the position is that

1) players have a right to challenge the league's decision when they believe that it is unreasonable,

2) players have a duty to do what's best for their team, and

3A) when the right conflicts with the duty, the duty wins.

other positions:

3B) when the right conflicts with the duty, the right wins

3C), when the right conflicts with the duty, the right wins if the damage to the player is large, but

the duty wins if the damage to the player is small

3D) when the right conflicts with the duty, the right wins if the damage to the team is small, but

the duty wins if the damage to the team is large

these principles describe different interpretations of what is best according baseball ethics;

note that something could be best yet not ethically obligatory. that, in fact, is my position

in all of this: I say that it's ethically best, but nonobligatory, that Bradley drop the appeal.

is Trammel likely to fill out a better lineup card than Lou?

Since when is filling out a lineup card all the manager does?

Since when is filling out a lineup card all the manager does?

you'd like me to list each of the functions? ok.

is Trammel likely to...

...fill out a better lineup card than Lou

-or-

manage the starter's pitch count better

-or-

make better lineup/pitching changes

-or-

make better decisions about weekly relief pitcher usage patterns and monthly starter

usage patterns

-or-

make better roster management decisions (i.e. decisions about 25- and 40-man rosters)

-or-

do a better job of firing up/calming down/focusing the players

-or-

do a better job of managing the things players work on during practice/rehab

-or-

do a better job of deflecting media attention away from the players who don't

want/need it

-or-

handle the umpires more effectively

-or-

order better food spreads for the clubhouse

-or-

do a better job of helping the rookies manage their money intelligently

-or-

do a better job of helping the rookies interact with women more kindly

-or-

do a better job of encouraging safe sex

-or-

do a better job of designing the team's personal appearance standards (ex: by instituting the obligatory mustache rule)

-or-

by helping the team pull better pranks on the opposing team

You are the one who specifically mentioned filling out a lineup card. Filling out the lineup card is not my problem with Lou, its his bullpen management, and other in game decisions that I question.

Who knows, but Lou being kicked out or suspended for backing up his player wouldnt be a big deal, and definately wouldnt hinder our chances at winning the 1-3 games hes suspended for.

I thought you were saying that Lou being out (ejected/suspended) would be the third win in the

win-win-win scenario?

Even if he's suspended, it's not as though Piniella is held in solitary confinement cut off from the team. Piniella probably still makes out the lineup card. They can talk on the phone and decide who's available and go over preferences in certain scenarios.

As far as in game decisions, Trammel has enough experience to do that just as well as Piniella. I'm not sure how a manager can do to fire up the team during a game or how much that helps.

I don't care what anyone says, Bradley is feeling the pressure and pressing. After he hit his RBI single tonight he took a huge breath and exhaled with obvious relief, much like I do after a Gregg (or Wood/Beck) save.

Milton does not look like a comfortable guy right now.

Now that were almost 20% into the season, how long before a bad start starts to become more than just that, because between Milton and Soto, we have 2 important players who were still waiting on anything from.

Someone in the game thread tonight posted a report that he heard that said that Soto is more hurt than the Cubs are letting on, and to not expect 2008 numbers from him this year at all.

At this point, I'm not expecting anything remotely close.

I'd be happy with .260/.330/.450 at this point. He's still a pretty good catcher behind the plate.

People have to remember that after May 18th of last year, his stat line for the rest of the year was .269/.336/.459/.795. This is more likely the type of pro Geovany Soto will be, not the Geo that lit up the NL in April 2008 before pitchers figured out how to pitch him.

I haven't been expecting superstar Soto. I'd settle for a tolerable Soto at this point.

He's got to shed the blubber.

jerry manuel's cap brushed an umpire's cap last night basically in the same way that milton's did, so we'll see what comes of that. if manuel doesn't get suspended then there's really no excuse for milton to be suspended.
