What's funny is that as much as it feels Vitters has been around forever, he's a year younger than Olt.

Yeah odds are you'll have at least 3 of Baez, Vitters, Olt, and Villanueva starting at AAA next season, so you have to move somebody, and considering Olt and Villanueva are both good with the glove, Vitters had to go.

i wonder if vitters will be in another organization come next year. depends on 40-man roster space and how highly the cubs view him, i assume. seems like he's being passed by pretty much everybody.

If he can handle the OF, I'd imagine he enters the year in the Scott Hairston role.

That said, Vogelbach is probably the best 1B prospect in the minors right now. It's an incredibly weak position.

Is that because most prospects get to fail at another position before they move to 1b?

That plays a role in it but there generally are elite prospects who enter the minors at 1B (think Hosmer, Smoak, Rizzo in recent years) and those types of prospects have been missing the past few seasons.

i know that jonathan singleton had a down year, but i'd take him over vogelbach pretty easily.

vogelbach's age 20 season: .284/.375/.449/.824 between low A and high A

singleton's age 20 season: .284/.396/.497/.893 in AA

There's definitely doubts about Vogelbach(I'm probably lower on him than most), but the important omission there is K rate, which isn't a problem at all for Vogelbach, and a pretty clear concern for Singleton that seems to have come home to roost at AAA.

that's true, but i think singleton's K rate wasn't all that glaring in 2011-12 (~24%), given his high walk rate. this year it was definitely up, but he's still quite young for his levels and i could see how missing the first two months of game action (why are we even suspending baseball players for positive marijuana tests?) would make him pretty rusty.

#Cubs Jason McLeod says he envisions 3B-SS-2B at Iowa next year of Villanueva-Baez-Alcantara

McLeod said second base would be an easier transition for Baez, if he had to move, because he's used to action in the middle of field. #Cubs

McLeod says he considers Christian Villanueva "the best defensive third baseman we have." #Cubs

In the next 6-18 months, the IF is going to see that first "waive" of talent. By ST 2015, you'll have:

Rizzo

Castro

Barney

Valbuena

Olt

Villanueva

Baez

Alcantara

Bryant

all vying for 4 infield spots.

If Barney is with the Cubs in ST 2015 I might hang myself.

Until he hits free agency Barney has a lot of value. On a team with good/great OPS, he's a great fit. With the Cubs, he's not a good fit.

Explain.. His OBP this year is .268 and his OPS is roughly around .570. His defense isn't that good, especially at such an easy position as 2B. He's lucky to be slightly above replacement value when defensive metrics are still being finely tuned and fluctuate drastically. DARWIN BARNEY SUCKS.

What does "a great fit on a team with good/great OPS he's mean?" Yeah he's a great fit when he's the last guy on the bench, I suppose. So was Theriot.

2011 and 2012 Barney was a fine starter at 2B and a tremendous backup. 2013 Barney is a borderline major leaguer. The only real difference between them peripherally is BABIP, and we'll have 2014(although likely in a smaller sample than any of the previous years) to see if he can bounce back. So come 2015, everyone will either be fine with Barney on the roster in a backup role(or as borderline/platoon starter if he has a great year), or he will have played himself off it. No nooses necessary.

he's very likely the best defensive 2B in baseball

This guy apparently doesn't understand the defensive spectrum.

Anybody have any idea what this is about?
