I would PAY to see the cries of NHL fans that are proponents of banning fighting after a season of no fighting... it would be hysterical after 10 superstars were injured and no one could do anything about it.

Because anyone who watches hockey regularly or has played knows that the statement is wrong.

I watch quite a bit of hockey. The fighting is stupid.

It's not going anywhere for a long time, because it's so ingrained in the culture, but it's pointless.

But did you play high school level organized hockey or higher?

I think the purpose that allowing fighting in hockey is supposed to serve is not very good reasoning. Allow fighting to prevent dirty play...This is not well thought out and really not bright.

That being said, fighting is part of hockey. Sending a message for the next game in the playoffs is part of the game. Like Kyle said, it is ingrained so deep in the sport, it will take some time to overcome it. I dont think any message is really getting sent. I also think it usually shows how desperate a team is.

Yep, these are basically my thoughts as well. Message sending hardly works... but it is a combination of frustration + the "never lay down" mentality that is a part of hockey... always has and always will be that mentality.

I don't mind fighting in the NHL, but I wonder if NHL fans think there should be fighting in other sports as well. If someone commits an intentional foul on your superstar, should he be able to get up and take some swings at the guy? If a pitcher hits your All-Star, should he be able to retaliate? I mean, your superstars might get hurt otherwise, right? Just playing devil's advocate here.

Nope, very valid argument.

You saw some nasty in the NBA playoffs in almost every series... but they know the disciplinary action for throwing punches. In baseball if someone hits Soriano right in the numbers, you expect any Cubs pitcher to repay the favor.

Sports have been pussified in the last decade. I remember a game between the Bulls/Knicks where MJ was punched and Pippen punched AT LEAST 2 guys and there were no SUSPENSIONS OR EJECTIONS, just technical fouls called.

Ah, back to the fighting in the NHL argument.

Fighting has been part of the game forever. It's obviously sanctioned in the rules, so comparisons to other professional sports don't apply. It's obviously difficult if not impossible to quantify, but the players say that well-timed fights can turn around momentum in games and give their team energy.

As for the goon fights, off faceoffs and what-not, it's part of the entertainment of regular-season NHL hockey. I go to a Blues game, I know I'm going to see a hockey game and likely Cam Janssen throwing down with someone. The crowds obviously love it. The place is just as loud as when goals are scored. I'm not going to apologize for liking to see the fights.

Screw the casual fan. If you don't like it, go watch soccer. But don't come in here and try to change a sport that has been great for decades and you don't know [expletive] about.

That is such a ridiculous argument.

Nobody avoids hitting a superstar because they are scared of a stupid fight.

You'd see it a lot more if there was no fighting... no question about it.

I am completely shocked that the Pens just steamrolled the Canes. I havent picked them all right, but havent been surprised by any playoff series yet. This one just stunned me.

I'm trying to figure out the logic of Bettman preferring old, floundering market Detroit in the finals over young team, flourishing fanbase Chicago. Can't do it.
