I'm the Opening Day Game Thread starter, but don't remember what the normal schedule is in terms of when I should get it going

Start the thread the evening before the game.

Okay, that's what I usually do. Just didn't remember if the Opening Day thread was expected sooner

Well, let me temper that just a little. Any time the day before should be fine.

Am I the only one not feelin' the love this year?

It has nothing to do with rosters or chances in the division or management philosophy or any of that stuff. I just don't seem to care as much this year. I haven't paid much attention to spring training. I'm not giddy with anticipation for the start of the season. I'm not looking forward hopefully to sunsplashed games a Wrigley or cross-town rivalries or fan-cams or celebrity sing-alongs or hot dogs or Old Style or the pop of a pitched ball hitting the catchers mitt or the cheer accompanying a ball hit to Waveland or a Santo conniption or any of it.

I'm not dreading any of it either. Not the heartbraking losses nor the rained out games nor the unfulfilled promise of young talent and well-paid vets nor the torn hamstrings nor the sore elbows nor the 0-6 homestands nor the overpriced concessions.

I feel almost nothing.

Or more accurately I feel too much of the last few years to allow myself to feel any of that other stuff.

Am I the only one?

I'm not giddy like I was when I was a kid, but this team should make the playoffs, and that's more than I could have said beginning the season for most Cubs teams during my lifetime.

As I've gotten older, I've cared less and less about spring training (outside of the first day pics and then the first radio game and the first tv game), but I still get ridiculously excited for opening day. This year is no different. Less than two weeks from now I'll be at Wrigley.. :D

Like last year, I've had absolutely zero excitement this spring training. I haven't even watched a single minute of a game. I barely even follow what's going on right now.

But once opening day starts, I'm all in.

Same here, or at least I assume I'll be ridiculously excited for opening day. I just set it to record on my DVR last night, because I'll be flying home earlier that day and may miss the first pitch.

No, you are absolutely not the only one. I was about the post pretty much the same thing. This is going to sound overly dramatic, but it's like my love of baseball died last October. Sure, that always happens when my teams lose like the Cubs did, and usually the excitement comes back a few months before the next season starts. Didn't happen this year. I have no interest in buying tickets. Usually by this time I have tickets lined up for several Cubs-Cards games at Busch. I haven't even looked.

I attribute some of it to my mind being on hockey, but mostly I think it's that last summer was so perfect, and the way it was ruined just makes me think I'm not read for another six month investment in these guys.

EDIT: But talk to me in June. Or May. Or next week. :)

I don't think you are the only one. Check out how long NSBB's game threads are for spring training games this year vs. last year. I think only one thread last year went less than 2 pages, and a lot of them 4-5 pages. Now this year a majority of them are less than 2 pages. Either less people are posting at NSBB, or there has been a remarkable reduction in interest between last spring and this spring.

I tend to believe part of it is that Cubs fans in general now look forward to October more than April. We've done all we can do from April-September, and now we want to succeed in October. Doesn't mean we won't follow the Cubs in the regular season that much less, or our sphincters won't get tight when Gregg is on the mound with a runner in scoring position protecting a 1 run lead. It just means in general, Cubs fans (at least not insane ones like some of us) see the bigger picture.

Of course as always, feel free to dig up this post and send it to me after the Cubs first 3 game losing streak.

Screw you guys.... our big signing is hitting .570 and slugging like .900 for the spring. Marmol will still be putting out the fires and Miles isn't playing everyday. Harden is relatively healthy. I'm excited.

Plus we MIGHT still get Peavy.

I am mostly on the same ship. I think most seasons you can get really excited, because each year might be the one in which everything falls into place and the team dominates all season. Well that happened last year, and it ended just as miserably as any playoff disappointment. The the symetry of the 100 year anniversary probably added to the anticipation (yeah I know this is the wrong board for sentiment like that). This year it feels more like I have to wait out a long season to see if anything positive will happen, because it's unlikely that the regular season could be anywhere near as great as last year.

Having said that, I've been checking in more freqently each day we get closer to opening day. And I'm sure within a few days I'll have a seriously vested interest again.

i'm not very excited right now either. i'll watch my fair share of games, i'll read about the team with papers, and i'll, of course, come to nsbb but i'm not nearly as excited that i've been in the past years (except 2005, 2006).

i'm hoping that changes by monday but i don't think i'll be "all-in" until october.

yup. that's it right there. we've seen the best Cubs team of our lifetime (last year) and the best potential team (2004). We've seen it where everything falls into place and we've seen what should have been. Nothing this year produces can compare

EXCEPT

playoff wins. to me, the season begins in October. Holy Crap, I sound like a Braves fan. I hate myself.
