Countdown to Opening Day thread`

yup. that's it right there. we've seen the best Cubs team of our lifetime (last year) and the best potential team (2004). We've seen it where everything falls into place and we've seen what should have been. Nothing this year produces can compare

EXCEPT

playoff wins. to me, the season begins in October. Holy Crap, I sound like a Braves fan. I hate myself.

It's true, though. I'll still be watching during the regular season and I'll still be (moderately) excited through the year, but it's going to be hard for this team (or any team for that matter) to top last year's 97-win season.

The only way this season can improve upon last year is with playoff wins. And I think that's a good thing for an organization. It's a sign that winning is becoming expected.

Am I the only one not feelin' the love this year?

It has nothing to do with rosters or chances in the division or management philosophy or any of that stuff. I just don't seem to care as much this year. I haven't paid much attention to spring training. I'm not giddy with anticipation for the start of the season. I'm not looking forward hopefully to sunsplashed games a Wrigley or cross-town rivalries or fan-cams or celebrity sing-alongs or hot dogs or Old Style or the pop of a pitched ball hitting the catchers mitt or the cheer accompanying a ball hit to Waveland or a Santo conniption or any of it.

I'm not dreading any of it either. Not the heartbraking losses nor the rained out games nor the unfulfilled promise of young talent and well-paid vets nor the torn hamstrings nor the sore elbows nor the 0-6 homestands nor the overpriced concessions.

I feel almost nothing.

Or more accurately I feel too much of the last few years to allow myself to feel any of that other stuff.

Am I the only one?

No, you are absolutely not the only one. I was about the post pretty much the same thing. This is going to sound overly dramatic, but it's like my love of baseball died last October. Sure, that always happens when my teams lose like the Cubs did, and usually the excitement comes back a few months before the next season starts. Didn't happen this year. I have no interest in buying tickets. Usually by this time I have tickets lined up for several Cubs-Cards games at Busch. I haven't even looked.

I attribute some of it to my mind being on hockey, but mostly I think it's that last summer was so perfect, and the way it was ruined just makes me think I'm not read for another six month investment in these guys.

EDIT: But talk to me in June. Or May. Or next week. :)

I am mostly on the same ship. I think most seasons you can get really excited, because each year might be the one in which everything falls into place and the team dominates all season. Well that happened last year, and it ended just as miserably as any playoff disappointment. The the symetry of the 100 year anniversary probably added to the anticipation (yeah I know this is the wrong board for sentiment like that). This year it feels more like I have to wait out a long season to see if anything positive will happen, because it's unlikely that the regular season could be anywhere near as great as last year.

Having said that, I've been checking in more freqently each day we get closer to opening day. And I'm sure within a few days I'll have a seriously vested interest again.

Nah, Braves fans don't even show up when the playoffs start.

FOUR DAYS!!! \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ \:D/

And to think, this date last year was Game #2 of the season.

And of course march 31 this year was a hell of a lot nicer weather than last year when we had to open in that rain. Figures.

Is the Yankee V. cubs game not televised tonight on any station? (with acception of mlb station)

It's on the MLB Network, YES, and MLB.tv. MLB.tv is providing a free feed to everyone with an account at MLB.com, with no blackouts.

I've never really gotten into spring training all that much and can't tell if I'm any more or less excited than last year, though it's probably about the same. If not on Sunday night, then right when I wake up on Monday, I'll be excited again.

Probable pitching matchups for the first week, accurate as of today

@ Astros 4/6-4/8 (Mon, Tues, Wed)

C. Zambrano vs. R. Oswalt

R. Dempster vs. W. Rodriguez

T. Lilly vs. B. Moehler

@ Brewers 4/10-4/12 (Fri, Sat, Sun)

R. Harden vs. B. Looper

C. Zambrano vs. D. Bush

R. Dempster vs. TBA

Marshall will be skipped for the first go-round through the rotation and be available out of the pen if necessary; Lilly is scheduled to start the home opener on the 13th.

so nice to have 3 straight games to open the year rather than the Opening day/day off/two more games thing we've done in the past

I know. I hate that.

They don't need a built in weather day since they are playing in a dome.

Huh? What makes the day after the opening day guaranteed bad weather?

Nothing does. It's just in case the Opening Day game gets rained out, then they can replay it the next day on the scheduled off day.

As has already been announced for tomorrow's Royals at White Sox game. It gives people with Opening Day tickets the chance to attend the game a day later, whereas if there were no day off between then those people would lose out on attending Opening Day because others would already have tickets.

Yes, I was a little noncommittal with my excitement before today, but as I drove home from work it really started to hit me.

Then, I got in and turned on the Yankees/Orioles game and at that point was fully ready for the Cubs game.

Now, I'm completely ready for the season.
