After leggin out an infiedl single, Lee seemed to be favoring his leg, I believe. Hoffpauir immediatly came in to pinch run. I was hearing this on the radio broadcast, and Pat and Ron mentioned the quad or hammy injury that has been nagging him lately. It may be nothing, or those clamoring for Hoff to start could get their wish.

if hoffpauir is our starting 1B for any stretch of time we're screwed.

So whether or not Lee goes down will determine how our season goes? I'm pretty sure the Cubs could survive for a while with Lee out if Ramirez, Soriano, Bradley and Soto are all healthy.

do i really need to tell you why i think guys like milton bradley will get hurt?

You're still here?

There will be no more talking about other posters instead of the topic or else warnings/suspensions will be handed out.

How about asking said offended posters to complete a thought without the arrogance of all-knowing deity? Maybe a warnings/suspension threat could go in that direction once in a blue moon?

We weren't talking about Milton Bradley or Alfonso Soriano or anyone on the pitching staff like Rich Harden or Carlos Zambrano or any other player/position on the roster. We were specifically talking about first base, Derrek Lee and Micah Hoffpauir.

Obviously other guys could and probably will get hurt, but you specifically singled out 1B/Lee/Hoffpauir and said if Hoffpauir is our starting 1B man (i.e. Lee is hurt) we're screwed.

If you wanted to bring other players into the mix, you should have added that. Not to mention that even if Lee gets hurt, it's not a lock that he's hurt at the same time as anyone else on the team.

The health of Derrek Lee isn't going to make our break our season.

Actually, you said we'd be fine without Lee, if ARam, Bradley, and Soriano are all healthy. There's a good chance that each of those players will miss a significant chunk of the season, so it's fair to not accept your premise.

i don't think there's a good chance of that at all. except for the broken wrist year, lee has been very durable, and ramirez has missed an average of 16 games the last 3 seasons. there's a good chance that a couple of those guys will miss significant time, but really it's pretty unlikely that lee and ramirez miss a significant chunk of the season.

You're fighting the hypo. The question is whether ARam, Bradley, and Soriano are all healthy. The assumption is that Lee isn't healthy.

So, in the hypo that's been presented, which assumes Lee isn't healthy, Soccer10k says we'll still be fine "if ARam, Bradley, Soriano, and Soto are healthy." I don't think it's unreasonable to expect one or more of ARam, Bradley, and Soriano to be out at the same time as our hypothetically injured Lee.

ETA - I missed the ARam thing the first time through. I noticed you included his '06 season (in which he missed 5 games), but conveniently stopped short of including his first '05 campaign, in which he missed 39. In his 5 full years with the Cubs, he's missed 17, 39, 5, 30, and 13. ARam's a great player, but how much are you willing to wager that he'll play more than 145 games this year? He's had plenty of health issues, just like Bradley and Soriano.

If Lee got hurt and missed a significant chunk of time, the lineup becomes:

Soriano

Fukudome/ Fontenot

Bradley

Ramirez

Hoffpauir

Soto

Fontenot/ Fukudome

Theriot

pitcher

That lineup is ok. I think most of us would flip Hoffpauir and Soto but Piniella probably opts for the balance and it protects Hoffpauir.

Obviously, if 3 of the Cubs best hitters get hurt at the same time that would be bad.

The Cubs did pretty well last year without a major league quality 1b for 5 months, I think they could live with Lee going down for a bit this year.

Yep because we were getting above average quality Major League production at 2B, C, CF. For at least two of those positions, the jury is still out on how they will perform. Plus although Lee wasn't giving us adequate offensive production, he still gives us presumably much better defense at first than Hoff would.

For real, who would hit into all of those double plays then? Its hard to find someone who can ground to the SS that consistantly.

wow that's the most delicate, emotionless, logical, stick-it-to-em response I've ever seen here.

Neither Fontenot, Soto, nor Johnson have shown us any indication that they wont be able to produce this season.
