MESA, Ariz.- Milton Bradley's Cubs debut on Thursday was brief and interesting, to say the least.

Bradley drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the first inning of the Cactus League game against Milwaukee, before being removed for a pinch-runner with mild tightness of the left quad.

So what happened?

"I had a tight quad," he replied.

How did it happen?

"When you work out hard, you get tight," he said.

Asked if it happened during the game, Bradley finally smiled and said: "I didn't do too much in the game. I felt it before, warming up. So I just let them know it felt tighter than it should've been. We've got a quarter-season worth of games in spring training, so I thought the best course of action was to let them know right now."

Bradley's history of injuries is well-chronicled, but he's not concerned that this one will turn into anything major. He worked out after leaving the game and expects to be back in the lineup in a couple days. Bradley is not going to take any unneccessary precautions.

"Spring is spring," he said. "I had like five at-bats last spring and hit .320 (during the season). Spring is overrated... I'm gonna hit. That's not a concern."

Hopefully he's being cautious.

Is this really anything to flip out over? He felt tightness so they sat him to be on the safe side...OH NOES. If it continues to happen, OK, fine, but the first time?

Breathe.

i don't think anybody is really freaking out aout this specific injury. it's just funny that he already is having leg problems

it's true, if he's healthy he's going to hit and he'll probably be the best hitter on the team.

unless he puts up his career numbers. then he'll be like the 4th or 5th best hitter on the team.

that's completely insane. how many cubs have a higher career EqA than milton bradley?

derrek lee does, but he's been declining the last two years whereas bradley has been improving, so there's no logical reason to think that lee would outhit him this year.

alfonso soriano doesn't. aramis ramirez doesn't. soto doesn't. nobody else could logically be a better hitter than bradley.

here are the projections from five sources:

Bill James (OPS/wOBA) -

Bradley: 880/386

Soto: 869/379

Lee: 868/379

Ramirez: 888/383

Soriano: 851/368

CHONE -

Bradley: 927/406

Soto: 837/367

Lee: 870/381

Ramirez: 890/384

Soriano: 867/375

Marcel -

Bradley: 895/384

Soto: 861/369

Lee: 825/359

Ramirez: 874/371

Soriano: 854/358

Oliver -

Bradley: 855/373

Soto: 781/340

Lee: 831/361

Ramirez: 834/358

Soriano: 828/351

PECOTA (OPS/EqA) -

Bradley: 927/311

Soto: 889/297

Lee: 833/285

Ramirez: 872/292

Soriano: 886/294

so basically what you are saying is that you think there's a decent chance that every one of these projections is wrong, that bradley will hit near his career average rather than being the best hitter on his team, in large part because he was a really lousy hitter about 8 years ago.

He'll be ready by the All-Star break

He'll be back by August, just in time for the playoff push!

He's out for the year.

Woah, sorry. Had some Wood and Prior flashbacks there.

hahahaha!

It's not really funny.

No, it's not. It's more sad than anything. I've just learned to take anything I hear about a Cubs player's injury with a BIG grain of salt. I've been mislead too many times to believe anything from this organization anymore regarding player injuries. They have to earn my trust back.

gtyty

Read my post again. I never said I didn't expect him to be good, I just don't think it's a foregone conclusion that he'll be a great hitter. He's been a great hitter for about his last full season's worth of at-bats. Before then he wasn't great for a corner outfielder.

His career OPS+ is 118, which would have been tied for 6th best on the Cubs last season.... hence my comment about him probably being like the 4th or 5th best hitter on the Cubs if he performed to his career averages.

Like I said, I'm not expecting that. I'm expecting him to put up numbers similar to what Aramis put up last year.... rate-wise.

i don't think anyone's flipping out, but hendry's prized offseason possession, who is notorious for getting hurt, got hurt after his first at bat of ST. it's not exactly a good start to his tenure as a cub.

it happened before the game, and i owuldn't call a tight quad "getting hurt". still thohg, you're right. even when he's healthy, he's not really "healthy"

And of course Rotoworld puts their usual 2 cents in

Bradley leaves Cubs debut with tight quad

Milton Bradley left his Cubs debut in the first inning with tightness in his left quad.

Get used to it, Cubs fans. Giving such an injury-prone player a $30 million contract was one of the biggest blunders of the offseason. This doesn't seem to be anything serious, but it's just the first of many times this season that Bradley will be day-to-day. Feb. 26 - 5:47 pm et
