...hes gotten screwed his entire career and should have been given a full-time starting gig years ago.

We can blame Dusty for this one too.

Andy Pratt was quite a haul too.

The deadline should be like April 15th and then you lose Type A/B status. I realize that rule is in place so that teams don't make backdoor deals with players to sign later in the offseason when they lose their status, but obviously this is an extreme example that screws over a player for no reason. And no one is doing anything about it.

the easiest way to avoid this problem is give no deadline for players to accept arbitration.

Or that.

But doesn't that screw over the team. If a team sets a budget, and the player you offer arby to doesn't accept or decline his arbitration, and the team hits their budget, and the player on March 20th decides to accept arbitration, he can really mess things us.

I guess then the next argument would be "then don't offer him arbitration". This is true, but this would probably lead to more teams dealing their upcoming FAs the previous July in order to get something for a player they won't be able to afford to resign in the offseason.

or Cruz could've just accepted arbitration. I don't feel sorry. he took the gamble and lost.

he can just blame and fire his agent.

Using logic to come to a sound conclusion, while failing to find a way to tie this subject in with Aaron Miles, is grounds for dismissal around here pal!

The only reason I feel sorry for Cruz is that God gave him the face of a 65 year old man at age 21. His disposition of being a middle reliever in a tight market doesn't keep me up at night.

I don't feel bad for Cruz, but he is the one player who was most hurt by the current market conditions combined with the current free agent compensation system. The best bet for him would be to sign a deal with Arizona.

Major League Baseball, the players' union, the Diamondbacks and Cruz's agents are in discussions to facilitate a sign-and-trade involving Cruz that adheres to the collective-bargaining agreement. Free agents cannot be traded before June 15 without their consent, but the union will permit Cruz and other Type A players to waive that right, according to Rob Manfred, baseball's executive vice-president of labor relations.

Rosenthal says the D'Backs are not discussing this kind of scenario with Hudson's agents, and it's unknown whether Cabrera and the White Sox are talking about it. Rosenthal says there would be a window, perhaps 48 hours, for the team to make a deal. If no deal is made then the player would remain a free agent

They were talking about this the other day on Hot Stove. I had no clue they could set that up. I was always under the impression they had to wait until June or so to trade FA's, didn't know they could agree to change that for specific cases.

It's mighty big of the players union to allow the CBA to be breached when it benefits their own, isn't it?

I love the blurb about how the union would permit Cruz and others to waive their individual rights. I don't think the union has a say in that decision.

I've been here since the beginning, but other than that it didn't bother me.

Probably not but it's sterile and I like the taste.

Wasn't it the union not allowing ARod to waive his rights that prevented him from being traded to Boston and instead to NYC?

I believe it was that he was willing to take a salary cut to fit in the Red Sox's payroll and the union objected.

That would be correct. ARod was will to cut something like $30 million off his deal to make the trade happen, but the union wasn't having it.

I thought he was just restructuring, but either way the point remains. If the union can stop a player from altering his contracted salary to go to the team he prefers, why can't it stop a player from waiving a no-trade right?

The union confuses me sometimes. Why won't the union allow something like that? Does the union get a portion of that money or something? If it's his money what do they care what he does with it?

And the fact that what A-Rod gets affects the everyone else. He's at the top of the food chain, what he does affects everyone below him.

All unions are set up to benefit the collective that makes up the union. Sometimes that means that the needs of the guys at the top have to be subordinate to everyone else. In the end, it benefits everyone.
