Griffey Chooses Mariners over Braves

According to ESPN.com, the Braves are making a run at Griffey.

Link.

The interest is apparently mutual. Griffey lives in Orlando, Fla., where Atlanta's spring training site is located, and has a good relationship with Braves manager Bobby Cox.

Griffey would also be willing to split time with Matt Diaz in left field for the Braves, sources said.

I don't think Griffey has much left, but Atlanta could use another outfielder. Depending on the cost, it might not be a bad move for the Braves.

I don't think these mostly washed-up old time baseball players draw in the fans like people suppose on here. "Well, I wasn't going to go see the Braves, but now that I get the chance to see Griffey limp around the outfield, hells yeah."

They don't know he's limping. Griffey is a name, name's put you in the news. Being in the news draws fans.

It all depends on the "old time" baseball player is. If Griffey played for the Braves and they played in Pittsburgh during a time I was around there looking for something to do, hell yes I would probably go to the game with the focus being to see The Kid live.

It's not just the straight draw. You know they'd move a good number of jerseys too.

on paper, Atlanta probably has the lightest hitting OF in the league. they need help for sure

You aren't kidding...I just looked at it and the rate stats for their three starting OFers last year was:

.251/.366/.309

.289/.340/.418

.239/.294/.359

That's like something out of the deadball era.

That's a nice story, but if Griffey was smart he would have chosen the NL team.

Oh well good for him, I'll look forward to seeing him play in Seattle next year.

Why would he take a NL team when he can play OF and DH in the AL. The only disadvantage to Seattle is their lack of coverage by national media.

As far as Griffey is concerned, that may be an advantage, not a disadvantage.

I just meant because people tend to hit better in the NL. But good point about the DH, wasn't thinking about that.

Wish I still had that Griffey-Mariners jersey shirt I had when I was 9.

I wish I could find that Bowman rookie card of his that was like 1/40th of an inch too long or something that was worth about 8 zillion dollars. At least it seemed like it when I was 8. My friend had one.

I could easily find it on eBay, I know, but I want to magically find a few of them in my house.
