How about, none of the above. He was hustling and overslid the bag. He slid without knowing the result of the pitch, If it's not ball 4 nobody remembers it even happened.

he was hustling, lol? he was trying to steal, he should've been "hustling". that doesnt mean it wasnt an idiotic play.

It's not an idiotic play. Suppose Molina airmails the ball and Ronny ends up scoring. Who made the idiotic play Molina or Cedeno? I mean Molina threw the ball down to second when he shouldn't have.

it was a freakish play with a bad result.

Please, stop the nonsense.

so if it wasnt stupid, what was it? unlucky?

A mistake? I mean, it's not like the only 2 adjectives you can use to describe a play are "idiotic" and "unlucky".

It's one of plays that sticks out in memory because it was weird and ended badly. I'd call it an error.

The thing about Cedeno is that supposedly he liked the night life, missed signs, and made throwing errors. When you do those things you don't have a lot of room for freakish errors.

Lou and Hendry are both old-school baseball men and stuff like this pisses them off to a much greater extent than the actual outcome of the play.

Oversliding a base is a physical mistake and is likely mechanical flaw as far as deciding when to slide and the inability to put yourself in position to stop your momentum, which doesn't detract from a player's intelligence.

The insanity of this thread has actually distracted me from my disappointment in this trade, so I thank you all.

Dumb play, mistake, flaw in judgment, like I said its all a matter of the adjective you want to use.

I think the people that could best gauge his aptitude would be the people that he spent the most time with, mainly Lou, Hendry, other coaches, his teammates, beat writers, etc. Bruce is pretty reserved in his criticism of players, so I would tend to think that if Bruce was insinuating that Cedeno was viewed as not very bright, that would be closer to the truth than any of us posters on a message board.

Who here is saying he's a smart player?

Be honest, you didn't really read his post, did you?

Well thank God we're on track for an 80 win 1st round exit season this year.

80 wins?

80 wins, yet somehow get into the playoffs?

Good chance 80 wins takes the central in 09

I think 80 wins is exremely pessimistic though.

Yeah it doesn't really seem like he knows what the argument was about

I think the Cardinals are a good bet to get to 81, especially if that looks like it's enough to win the division and they make a midseason acquisition.

And of course, combining the Cardinals, 81-81 and a playoff berth is a sure way to an 11-game postseason win streak.

Yeah maybe a little pessimistic. Just not thrilled with the moves Hendry has been making this offseason. I thought we were suppose to get better?

Where did I say anything about Cedeno and his intelligence or lack of?

To try and insinuate that a player oversliding a base is somehow part of a mental flaw, I doubt that person has really spent much running the bases in a live game but if they don't overslide it while playing The show then it must not occur in real life.

When you are the best team in the league, have little in the minors, and have backloaded a bunch of contracts in recent years, getting better is pretty much not an option.

Not at even odds. There's not a team outside the Cubs that I'd project at 81 wins or better right now, but the odds are one of the other five will have a better than expected season.

No, because I never said I thought it would. I said there's a good chance.

Who else besides the Cubs are a great bet to be over .500 this year?

Cardinals: Overachieved last year. Still have a terrible bullpen.

Brewers: Potentially lost 2 of their best starters.

Astros: Worse than last year.

Pirates: Still the Pirates

Reds: I doubt they break 80 this year.

a great bet? i dont know how you define that, but i expect at least two other teams to be over .500. probably the cards and astros. maybe the brewers too.
