The San Diego Padres have agreed to terms with pitcher Mark Prior and second baseman Chris Burke on minor league deals and have invited each to spring training.

If Prior pitches in the major leagues, he'll earn $1 million, and Burke -- who will go into spring training with a strong chance of winning the Padres' everyday job at second -- will earn $650,000.

Prior has not pitched in the major leagues since 2006 with the Chicago Cubs and only threw 43 2/3 innings that year due to a variety of injuries. He was sidelined for all of 2007 after having shoulder surgery.

The Padres signed him that offseason but he again suffered a shoulder injury and had season-ending surgery before throwing a pitch in the big leagues.

Burke has spent his entire five-year career with the Houston Astros. He is a career .241 hitter with 22 homers and 106 RBIs.

It's sick that Prior gets paid a million or whatever he is for doing absolutley nothing, the guy hasn't pitched since '06..Must be nice to get a million dollars for sitting on your ass and doing nothing

He has to pitch in the majors to make a $1m.

Good work, if you can get it.

Good for him. I hope he finally gets healthy and gets back to the majors someday. It's a shame to see all that talent be ruined by injuries.

At this point, Jeff Blauser has a better chance at reaching the majors then Mark Prior. Sad to say, but it remains, I highly doubt we'll see Mark Prior in the majors again.

Making fun of him for "sitting on his ass" for a million dollars sucks. Jealous much? I know you're partly being sarcastic, but come on. You don't think he's working out for hours upon hours a day? You don't think he wants to come back and pitch in the big leagues?

Some of you are just drinking the haterade the moment you roll out of bed.

hours upon hours? definitely not. i'd be surprised if he works out daily at this point.

You can't be serious. What else do you think he's doing? E-mailing his cousin for 8 hours a day?

Chris Burke would have been a better pickup than Aaron Miles.

agreed, that .273 slugging % would look great in a cubs uniform

Miles career slugging- .364

Burke career slugging- .363

Plus Burke is about 4 years younger, better defensively than Miles, and much cheaper.
