So Cowher, Shanahan, and Schottenheimer are all possibly available? I almost wish my team was in the market for a head coach.

Holmgren too maybe?

Nope, he's sitting out a year and then thinking about coming back. That's why he's leaving the Seahawks.

A bit of news out there:

Dick Jauron will be retained by Buffalo. Not a great decision, nor a terrible one. I'm not sure they'd have pulled one of the better coaches anyway.

Mike Martz has been dismissed from the 49ers' OC position. Any team that needs offense should give him a call.

And the Browns and Eric Mangini are going to chat about him potentially taking over there. That'd be a good hire, as I think he got a raw deal in New York. There have also been rumors that Cleveland will take the dual package of Scott Pioli (personnel) and Josh McDaniels from New England.

Now, I don't know if this is a good source, but The National Football Post is reportingthat Shanahan has been Shanacanned.

He deserves it after the collapse at the end of the year....I know the D is bad, but come on

The D was historically bad. Second least efficient defense in the tracked statistical era (last 20 years), behind this year's Detroit defense.

I really don't trust their formulas and they keep tweaking them. I used to buy into them pretty well but the last year or two I keep becoming more skeptical.

It seems all of the worst and best "ever" of the last 20 years are always units since 2000. Certain styles skew the results in odd directions (Eagles anyone?) and I just can't agree with a lot of their individual rankings.

I just don't think football works as well for saber type analysis.

I'd love to see Shanahan given the moon and full control over the offense, but I doubt he'd take it or the Bears would offer it.

What has Mike Shanahan done since John Elway retired that Lovie Smith hasn't?

Smith is more accomplished since 2005 than Shanahan is since 1999. ONE playoff win in that span and numerous late season collapses. I like him as offensive mind and think he's overall one of the better coach's in the league but he in no way deserves "the moon" at the expense of Lovie Smith. Smith's been a flat out more accomplished coach recently.

You can't compare Shanahan to Lovie. Shanahan was also GM. He was bad at that job, but I still think he was a good coach. Unfortunately that's a tough separation to make.

Like John Clayton says today, Shanahan was fired as GM, not as coach. Unfortunately one goes with the other.

That's the biggest reason I wouldn't want a big name, if he insisted on being GM as well.

They were speculating on Mike & Mike this morning that Shanahan might go to Dallas. I don't see how that would happen if Shanahan left Denver because they didn't want him to be GM anymore. Jerry Jones shops for the groceries in Dallas -- he's not abdicating that job any time soon.

Either way, I think Mike's going to have to consider being just a coach again. He didn't do a good job as coach/GM, and he's going to have to realize that at some point and move on.

The Bengals had a lot of weird games down the stretch. Ultra-conservative offense, hand the ball off to Benson a ton, and play good defense. I think Lewis might have saved his job actually.

I would tend to think the ultra-conservative offense had a lot to do with Ryan Fitzpatrick starting at QB for Cincy.

why is marvin lewis still the head coach of the bengals?

i think they're too cheap to fire him with 2 years left on his contract.

Remember when the Bengals looked like they could actually be decent a few years ago? man has this team fallen

Bill Cowher has decided stick around at CBS for another year and will not be returning to the sidelines next season. Sorry to those whose team is looking for a new head coach.

Bill Cowher doesn't plan to coach in the NFL next year, and will stay with CBS Sports as a studio analyst.

I don't have a link for this one since I heard it at some point today on one of the football stations (might well have been Adam Schefter on NFL Network) that the leading candidate for the Jets' head coaching job is Brian Schottenheimer. May not be a bad hire (Marty's son), but I'm betting there were some livid New Yorkers after hearing that news.

I'm not sure what you mean by "the moon", but I understand why you like his methodology. Denver has had some incredible running teams in his tenure, but Cutler has been a very good pick too.

I am still not completely convinced that Wade Phillips job safe. J Jones really likes Shanahan, and Shanahan loves Tony Romo. With all the talk in the locker room being that Phillips was too laid back and didn't have enough control, and rumors that Jones is becoming more upset about the loss now than he was a week ago.

i'm not sure why one would get progressively more angry about losing by 38 points to your biggest rival in a "win and in" game. wouldn't you be at the height of your rage during the 3rd quarter at about the time that the eagles ran a second fumble back for a touchdown?

The Jets are planning on interviewing Jeff Jagodzinski today and BC officials have told Jag that if he goes through with the interview, they will fire him.

Despite the threat from athletic director Gene DeFilippo, Jagodzinski plans to do the interview with the Jets, the sources said. Those sources said that in the event Jagodzinski is fired, BC would promote offensive coordinator Steve Logan to head coach.

I've never heard of that before, firing a coach just for interviewing for an NFL coaching job.

I figure if they want a coach who will not garner interest from NFL clubs or who will not have an interest in moving to the next level, it's likely that they won't have many good coaches.

Part of having a great coach is the fear that he may leave for a better opportunity when one arises.

there's probably contract language that states any other school/team must ask permission from BC before interviewing, and they clearly didn't give it to the Jets

Could be, but I haven't heard contract language mentioned in the stories I've read. It's just been a "threat" from the AD.

I don't see how he can go back to BC now. You know your AD is essentially trying to trap you into the job with threats, what kind of working environment would that be?
