Hehe, there's probably 20 teams that have fans screaming at their GMs: "Get Cutler!!!" right now.

Noooo...I'm the only one. :hello:

Clayton was saying the only way Denver would trade Cutler is if they get a QB in return. If that's true, forget it Chicago. I doubt Orton would qualify.

Orton + first round pick? I'm awful at these proposals...I have no idea what market value is...

ESPN.com thinks the NFC north would be a good fit, and analyzes how Cutler would fit with Chicago, Detroit, or Minny

Chicago Bears

Current depth chart: Kyle Orton, Caleb Hanie, Brett Basanez

Key quote: "We have to stay focused on the quarterback position. You win because of the quarterback." (General manager Jerry Angelo early in the offseason.)

Cliff's notes: The Bears aren't sure if Orton is their long-term starter, but to this point they appear set to give him another season to prove himself.

Why Cutler makes sense: He was a Bears fan growing up, so it's likely he would accept a trade to Chicago. That's no small accomplishment for a player who appears to have some maintenance issues. Cutler has proved more in three years than Orton has in four and still has more room for improvement. The Bears could also offer the Broncos a short-term solution at the position by including Orton in the deal.

Why it's difficult to imagine: The Bears typically guard their draft picks and cash with equal passion. Is Chicago willing to pay its quarterback a premium salary, which a trade for Cutler would essentially require? For Cutler, you figure it would take upwards of $30 million in guaranteed money to complete a deal.

It would be pretty high. The question would be, how much of a downgrade would Denver take? Because the teams that truly have franchise QBs for the long term would be the teams who aren't interested in trading. The Broncs would either need to take a lesser QB in return, or an older QB, or one who isn't signed long term anymore, etc. There would have to be a downgrade -- so probably a QB + a pick would be in the ballpark. I have no idea which QB, and what level draft pick.

Let's take a look at who definitely isn't:

Indy

New England

San Diego

New Orleans

Pittsburgh

Arizona

NY Giants

Atlanta

Kansas City

Dallas

Baltimore

Most likely not:

Philly

Green Bay

Tennessee

Cleveland

Cincy

Washington

Houston

Might be, but they aren't going to get anywhere:

Carolina

Seattle

Oakland

Jacksonville

Buffalo

Unfortunately, Chicago

Now teams that are, have a need and can realistically pull it off:

Detroit

Minnesota

St. Louis

NY Jets

Tampa

Miami

San Fran

Detroit is the most obvious candidate. With two 1s, they can afford to trade one of them plus more for Cutler. But would he whine about going there?

The Bears should offer Urlacher + for Cutler.

I'd definitely offer Urlacher + a pick -- a high one -- for Cutler.

But I really doubt the Broncs would take an aging MLB in return for him, don't you?

I think it would take Orton, plus this year's 1, plus more, maybe next year's 2. The Bears don't really have any positions where depth is a strength they could trade from, but presumably Denver would be interested in defensive players. Urlacher, Orton and a 2nd? I doubt they'd bite.

So, Orton + this year's 1st, next year's 2nd? I think I'd do that. I don't believe Denver would though.

I really hope he doesn't go to the Jets.

Yeah, the real issue is that Denver will need a QB. So I think Orton would have to be in any deal. Orton, Urlacher and a 2nd for Cutler sounds like something I could live with.

Denver has Chris Simms now......

I could see Baltimore and any of those "most likely not" teams (save for Tennessee) trading their QB for Cutler. Minnesota, Detroit, and Tampa are the most likely teams in any QB discussion. All have dire needs for a QB. Vikes are close and a QB could take them all the way. Detroit needs a face of the franchise and has money and picks. Tampa has tons of money and also needs a face.

Hard to imagine any other team outbidding any of those 3 teams.

I was referring to fan bases crying out for management to make a trade. I'm sure some of those teams would be happy to trade their guy for Cutler, but I don't see an outcry coming from those towns. The most overwhelming thing I've heard about Jay Cutler from the general population is his sub .500 record.

Yeah, I'm hearing that too. That's pretty weak, IMO. Denver has been horrible defensively for years. The biggest issue I have with him is his propensity to force the ball and misread defenses. He throws his fair share of INTs, but he's clear a franchise caliber QB. I'd trade a1st and 3rd rounder for him or do any of the deals mentioned above.

Honestly, I don't see there being a chance Baltimore is interested. Cutler is more proven than Flacco, but after leading them to the postseason (one game shy of the Super Bowl) and with there not being a coaching change of any sort (offensively), I don't think Baltimore would consider the idea of trading Flacco and a high pick or two for Cutler.

I don't think they'd trade Flacco AND a high pick. But I think they would entertain the idea. Though, they don't have the money or picks to pull it off.

If they could do Flacco for Cutler straight up, they might have some interest, but that's unlikely enough that I don't think they risk even a call to check.

Perhaps Denver would send a 3rd Rnd pick our way this season or next if we include this year's no. 1, next year's no. 2 and Orton.

Problem as I see it is that giving them our picks won't enable them to draft a good young QB this year. Isnt Sanchez likely to be gone by then?

This is one of those situations where you give up the house if necessary and figure everything else out later. Kind of like the Kobe trade (not that Cutler is the equivalent of Kobe in the NFL).

Sanchez could last to the Broncos 12th pick.

Yeah. Unfortunately it also seems very out of character for Angelo to engage in that kind of "throw the house at him" trade negotiations.

Well, maybe not unfortunately. Depends on what the price would actually be.
