The Mets that is

http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/2008/12/derek_lowe_clos.html

According to a baseball source, The New York Mets appear to be closing in on a deal for free-agent pitcher Derek Lowe.

The deal is believed to be four years in length, or three years with a vesting option. The contract is estimated to be worth between $14-16 million per season. Lowe just finished up a four year, $36 million deal with the Dodgers.

In 2008, Lowe was the Dodgers most consistent pitcher down the stretch and finished with a 3.24 ERA to go along with a 14-11 record with 211 innings pitched.

4 years seems a little much considering age, but he's a damn good pitcher.

He's good but not that good and definitely not as good as that ridiculous contract he's about to sign. These contracts are just getting too crazy.

That's a rich contract for someone who clearly benefitted from pitching in Dodger Stadium.

They just finished paying Pedro, who was on the downside of his career, $52.5 mil for 79 starts over the last 4 years so it's obvious that they have money to give a huge contact to another pitcher on the downside of his career.

Replace one bad decision with another. If Lowe just changed his name to Lowepez, Minaya would add another $10 mil to his deal.

The Pedro deal wasn't really bad at all when he was signed. He was still 33 and really good. He was ridiculously good in his first year with the Mets and then the injuries started. You couldn't really have predicted that his body would have broken down that much that quickly.

The Red Sox predicted it. That's why they didn't want to give him more than 3 years.

I think the Red Sox decision was based more on declining skills, not health.

you couldn't? he had physical problems (some minor, some major) pretty much every year since 2000 and he's weighs like 120 lbs but throws mid-90s. that doesn't really scream "long career" like a guy with a clemens/schilling body. he's the greatest pitcher of our generation but only got 4 years, $50M... that should tell you something about how much his durability concerned teams.

Seriously, you could predict it, and many teams did. It was reported that the Mets more or less assumed he would miss much of the time to injury, but were so desperate for top notch pitching that they were willing to pay him for 2-3 years of no pitching for 2-3 years of his pitching.

You could have predicted it just from the fact that he's a 33-year-old pitcher.

but mostly from his injury, since looking at, say, derek lowe, roger clemens, tom glavine or greg maddux and saying "the guy is 33, he'll probably get hurt" would be really dumb.

Survivor bias.

It was a bad deal for the time in the sense that they took a guy with a ton of miles and made him one of the highest paid pitchers at the time. That alone wasn't so bad as adding a fourth guaranteed year that absolutely no one was willing to gamble on. It was a gamble contract and they ended up missing the jackpot. Much like guaranteeing Lowe 60-something mil will be a gamble today.

find me a handful of guys who were almost always healthy their first 10-15 years pitching as professionals and then started to break down frequently in their early 30s.

speaking of handfuls, I had a handful of ass at the bar tonight....

You know, your wife isn't going to appreciate that you think her ass is as big as your hand...
