Probably old news, but Steve Phillips was on ESPN radio the other day and was speculating the Mets might have to scale back a little because the Wilpon's had a ton of money tied up with Madoff. May affect their ability to sign big names a little.

Lowe Rejected Offer, Wants $16MM Per Year

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [January 3 at 7:56pm CST]

Matthew Cerrone of MetsBlog passes on some comments made tonight by Jon Heyman on the MLB Network's Hot Stove Live.

According to Heyman, Derek Lowe rejected the Mets' three year $36MM offer because he hopes to sign a deal worth $16MM per season.

The Phillies and Braves are the Mets' biggest competitors for Lowe.

The Red Sox and a mystery team are also involved.

Later on in the show, Mets GM Omar Minaya confirmed interest in Lowe, Randy Wolf and others. Cerrone notes that Minaya did not mention Oliver Perez.

Looks like the guy, or his agent is dillusional. He'll get 12 mil/year tops. You know theres something wrong with the country when were in a financial crisis nationwide, meanwhile we have ballplayer haggling over an extra 4 mil like it's nothing.

that's when you know there's something wrong with the country?

and if the guy thinks he's worth 33% more than he's being offered, more power to him for going after that. if you're getting offered 30 grand and you think you're worth 40 grand, are you just going to accept the deal?
