I haven't really seen a lot of interest in him, other than the Rangers. What if he'd take a 1 year deal to prove he's healthy? I'd just reserve one rotation spot for him and Harden, and have them switch off, but that would obviously never happen.

If he takes a 1 year deal to prove he's healthy, he has a bad agent. He's not going to stay healthy an entire year.

Put him and Harden on Maddux-like pitch counts, be content with 5-6IP (80-90 pitches), keep a 7th bullpen guy to help eat innings, and hope for 165-175IP for each of them.

Innings Pitched over the past three years-

Player A: 106 , 141, 198.

Player B: 135, 165, 221.

ERA+ over the last three years-

Player A: 119, 117, 139.

Player B: 115, 119, 105.

One of these just signed a 5/82 contract.

The other in comparison should be worth at 3/45.

I'm not saying Sheets will get that much, but he's only a little less durable than Burnett and more effective.

I asked Churchill abut what pitchers the Cubs might be after and he mentioned Sheets' name-

Lowe's price would have to come down for the Mets or the Cubs to be serious, but that might happen.

I did hear Ben Sheets and the Cubs in the same sentence. That's ideal.

so i asked him where he heard that

Twas one of the few crosscheckers the Cubs have. He's recommended Sheets over Lowe and Peavy, and he reco'd trying to get together with Seattle and FLA on a 3-way for Hermida. Seattle wants Hermida, too, though, but they have pieces FLA really wanted, namely catcher Adam Moore.

If Sheets could be had for 3/36, that's a bargain in this market. He carries with him some durability issues, but considering the contract the Yankees gave Burnett, Sheets at 3/36 would be outstanding.

The best part of signing Sheets would be that we get to keep Marshall. With Sheets and Harden in the rotation, you had better have another starter available. It would also mean Gaudin, Wuertz, Guzman, etc. had better be ready for long middle relief stints.

If Bradley signs elsewhere I would rather we spend the money on sheets instead of guys like Abreu/Dunn (I know different positions but Sheets improves our team more than those two would IMO). We would have an awesome rotation, we wouldn't have to score that much with Z/Sheets/Lilly/Demp/Harden, and we still have enough prospects/players from not trading for Peavy we could make a trade mid-season for a bat, someone always becomes available.

Sheets is smart to wait this out a bit. If Pettitte decides to be an idiot and leave the Yankees, they they will jump back into the Sheets negotiations and the price will skyrocket.

trade Vitters+ for Hermida

Even if Jeremy Hermida wasn't totally mediocre at baseball and it would be a good idea for the Cubs to acquire him, would they really need to overpay with Josh Vitters?

I'm not a big fan of trading Vitters for anything short of a perennial allstar.

Vitters is probably the most overrated Cub prospect since Bobby Hill.

I'd say Hermida has just as good a chance as being a perennial allstar as Vitters does, maybe a better chance. The only difference is position and the fact that Hermida is closer

He's fine. He's not as good as many people around here seem to think he is.

It's comments like these that lead me to believe that the Cubs prospects stand at best half the chance of other team's prospects to succeed. If they don't immediately perform they're "garbage" and people want to chase them away.

why, because he hasn't put up huge numbers just yet? he put up really nice numbers in 2007. when a top prospect/guy that's hyped as much as him produces that way that easly it's a pretty good sign. he could easily put up huge numbers next season and nobody would be surprised. that's why people like him. to call him "mediocre" is kind of silly. he was bad last year, yes, but that doesn't mean he's a bad player. he's young and played through injuries last year.

Nowhere did I say he was garbage.
