He could be a very nice fit in Phillies lineup, however, I can see them desperately scrabling to trade him next year.

This makes me happy because not only is he off the market, but with one of his potential targets down, it puts some pressure on Hendry to go out and get Dunn or Bradley.

Why? The guy can rake.

He's 36, is expensive, awful on defense, and I wouldn't say an .837 OPS for a corner outfielder is "raking".

well, I can understand the age, but he can rake it. I understand you define "rake it" different than I do. So be it.

Ibanez hit .293 this season, with 23 homers, 110 RBIs, a .358 on-base percentage and a .472 slugging percentage. He is one of just five outfielders who have driven in at least 100 runs in each of the past three seasons. The others: Carlos Beltran, Magglio Ordonez, Carlos Lee and Bobby Abreu.

yes because rbis are such a good way to evaluate talent. sorry, a .472 slugging percentage from a corner outfielder isn't raking. he's a good hitter.

Yeah, age was my only hang up with Ibanez. I could see Ibanez cracking 30 HR's hitting in a much more friendly hitting park for half his games. Not to mention a better overall line up which should increase the amount of at bats by a significant margin. I'd expect to see his SLG to be a little closer to .500 this season, with a potentially high risk drop off after '09.

A good hitter would have certainly been better than Fukudome. I don't think he's incredible or anything, but the comments of "oh thank GOD!" are a little over the top.

Regardless of the semantics of "raking", Ibanez would've fulfilled the middle-of-the-order LH bat requirement quite well. In that single dimension he would've been a real nice fit.

The problem is, every other important consideration is seriously scary -- the money, the age vs. length, the defense. Especially the defense.

I have not seen any talk about Pat the Bat this offseason. Can he play RF? he had a great 08 and is only 32.

He can barely play left. Strictly DH material.

Ironically, so is Ibanez. They are quite equal in the defensive deficiencies. Ohh, and Burrell is far superior offensively. I don't know how much Burrell wanted but I think they could have gotten him for a only few more mil, while hes worth about 6-7 more mil than Ibanez.

i'd argue Fukudome had a more productive season last year overall and projects to have a more productive season this year as well, by more than a small margin
