Zambrano has said he doesn't want to pitch in the 2009 event because he doesn't want to risk injury.

good

But that says nothing about his desire to hit in the event. It only says he doesn't want to pitch. :D

He probably doesn't want to hurt the other pitchers, either. (confidence wise)

Alex Maestri is officially on the Italian roster.

Looks like there will be a second Cubs minor leaguer in the WBC: Hung-Wen Chen is on the preliminary Taiwanese roster.

I hate the fact that I have to worry about Cubs' players getting injured before the season even starts.

In soccer, international competition is more prestigious than club competition. Why is baseball so different?

Every other sport is different. There was no international competition worth having, since the US dominate the sport for the first 3/4 of its existance. Futbol has had that internation level of competition long before guys made millions of pounds/francs/pesos/euros/etc. I guarantee if they didn't already have the world cup in place, it would be hard as heck to get players interested, let alone fans. They make their living playing professionally. Back when guys didn't get paid much, the international games were a way for them to get more recognition. But now, there is no financial gain to play in the WBC or not play in the WBC.

Because baseball's a real sport, Duke Boy.

Or it could that it is hard for something to be presitigious that is set to occur for the 2nd time. And potentially why my 2nd annual EdwardBeerHands-a-thon didn't get much press.

Cubs on provisional 45-man WBC rosters:

http://web.worldbaseballclassic.com/rosters/index.jsp?season=2009&&sort=mlbclub#112

Remember that being on the provisional roster doesn't guarantee in the slightest that they'll actually be on the final 28-man roster for their country.

If I was Hendry/Lou I would be on the phone tomorrow telling all these guys to say no. It's only a matter of time until some big name player gets hurt and is out for a long period of time in this traveshamockery of an event, and I don't want it to be a Cub. Hopefully when the revised rosters come out no Cubs are on them, especially Z, Lilly, Harden and Soto.

Iron man Harden is the only one tough enough to take on the WBC and the regular season. If not obvious there should be a crap of green over my font right now :banghead:

You did read what I said about a player being on the provisional roster, right?

I'd probably let Fukudome go.

how is the WBC any different then spring training? Can't a big name get hurt in the spring too?

The difference is that Spring Training is mandatory for players, and it's actually part of MLB and its teams, it's important they get ready for the season. The WBC is completely voluntary and it is pretty much an exhibition. Players are also on strict training programs and starting to do stuff early can be detrimental to getting prepared for the season. A lot of the pitchers that were in the WBC last time had hard times staying healthy/effective throughout the season following it. Players get paid to play for their MLB teams and take part in events/games with their team, not to play in some meaningless exhibition. It would be different if players were making only thousands of dollars to play MLB, but when players are making $10+ million a year there is no need for them to go out and risk injury playing in an event that has no meaning, when they are being paid by a organization to play for their team.

It comes as no huge surprise that Cubs pitcher Rich Harden has eliminated himself from Canada's roster for the World Baseball Classic, which runs concurrent with spring training.

Harden, who might not be ready to start for the Cubs during early March because of his on-and-off right shoulder, is quoted in Canadian newspapers as saying he is bowing out.

"I missed the last [2006] WBC because I was coming off surgery, and that just killed me to be in the stands watching," he was quoted as saying. "And this time it will be just as difficult to watch because I want to play and represent Canada.

"If I was 100 percent and it was a different year and different scenario, I would have jumped at the opportunity to play in the WBC. It's unfortunate, but it's not the decision I can make right now. In my heart I was hoping it would work out but in my head I had a feeling it wouldn't. I kind of knew the decision would be made for me by circumstance. It's very disappointing not to play for Canada but my No. 1 priority is the Cubs. I've just started to throw and [March] is too soon for me."

I think fan interest dictates whether an event has meaning or not. And the WBC has a lot of fan interest, way more than expected back in 2006.

That's probably what awaits Dwayne Kemp - he hasn't played for the Dutch international squad before (only on the junior level); I'd be surprised if he makes it now.
