I figured Spears was a lock and Veal a near lock. Wow.

I'm sure Berg's outing last night was the final deciding factor in getting him rostered: 0.2 IP, 6 H, 8 ER, 3 BB, 1 K, 1 WP, 1 HR. Either that or his 9.88 ERA in the VWL.

So Veal can be taken as a Rule 5 then? Theres a pretty good chance he will. Hes a lefty, and was a pretty big prospect a few years back. Hes essentially a spring training invitee to any team interested, and if it doesnt work, back to Tennessee he goes.

Never even heard of Marcus Mateo.

Cubs can still trade a guy like Veal before the rule 5 right? Hendry gonna make a deal soon and more than likely it a 3-1 type clearing some roster space.

Yeah, I think Veal will get picked. He still has good stuff, his control is just really bad. Oddly enough, Justin Berg has horrible control too.

I really don't understand Veal not being rostered, especially considering Berg was rostered.

My only guess would be is that the Cubs are planning to trade Veal long before the Rule V (or 5, whichever it is) draft.

Then the other team would have to roster him or risk losing a guy they just acquired. The only way this would affect Veal being traded is that if he's traded before the draft, he'll be included as a PTBNL based on whether he gets taken or not.

The other reason for not rostering Veal is this: the Cubs do not view Veal as a future major leaguer and they don't value him as much as they once did.

Does anyone else think that the selection of these players may have involved a hat full of slips of paper with names written on them?

Or maybe a dart board.

Justin Berg. The Cubs got him from the Yankees for Matt Lawton, right?

Yes.

Mateo passed Jose Ceda by, allowing the Cubs to trade Ceda for Gregg

This is from Bruce Miles Blog, I didn't think Mateo was that highly thought of.

He has good stuff but he shouldn't be thought of that highly.
