David Kaplan on CTL said he believes the 3 prospects the Cubs got in the DeRosa deal are enough to land Peavy and he thinks they are just waiting for the new owner to sign off on it.

As much as i hate Kaplan please dont miss quote the guy just to make him sound like a moron. I watched CTL and Kaplan never said this. Kaplan simply responded to want David Haugh asked. Haugh made a comment toward Kaplan and said that he assumed the prospects they got in the Derosa would be moved in a peavy trade and all Kaplan said was that it was a possibility that they would be part of the trade. So no, he never said that those prospects alone would net peavy as this quote suggests. So yeah dont twist the words to your liking, anyone with half a brain would know that the three prospects the cubs got for derosa won't come close to enough for peavy.

Padres Backed Away From Cubs-Peavy Deal?

By Tim Dierkes [January 6 at 8:08am CST]

A note we missed from last night's Gordon Edes story:

The Cubs and Padres appeared close to a deal for Jake Peavy in Las Vegas, but the Padres backed away, leaving the Cubs convinced that someone over Kevin Towers’ head pulled the plug.

You may recall that during the Winter Meetings Towers told reporters that Cubs GM Jim Hendry pulled out of the deal.

If we dont get Peavy or even if we do, would anybody be unwilling to trade Lilly away to clear up the cap space and sign Perez as your LH starter?

Oliver Perez? I doubt you'd get him for much less than what you'd save from Lilly, and I'd rather have Lilly.

Throwing your colleague under the bus (apparently dishonestly) is probably not the best way to foster a good relationship that might lead to a deal later on.

Unless that's what the Pads' owner told Towers to do because he never wanted a deal to get done. But that doesn't really make sense. Isn't that team being sold? Seems like they'd want to unload Peavy now.

I think there are probably plenty of options, you have to look at teams with Offensive needs since thats what the Cubs Provide. I would probably consider trading DLee and one or two of the Cleveland Pitching Prospects to the Giants for Matt Cain and then signing Adam Dunn to Play 1B. I mean you lose defense but gain more offense and a stud pitcher. As far as the Lilly thing, i would rather have Perez than Lilly in my opinion both because of youth and stuff.

If Peavy becomes unlikely, is there another SP that the DeRosa prospects could be swung for?

I'd love to see them go for Greinke or something

The only problem I have with Oliver Perez is that he seems to be very similar to Jason Marquis, in that they both have the ability to take the ball every 5th day and give the club a chance to win. That don't always bring it. Not to mention like Marquis, Perez seems to have that one inning---you know it's coming---that he can go from looking real good to looking very mediocre. To be fair, I much rather keep Lilly for another yr, let him put up another better then league average performance and then moved him after the season.

Why not sign Sheets to a one/two year deal? You have Marshall/Samardzija to back him up if he gets hurt for a period of time.

If payroll is really "frozen", they simply don't have the $$$ for that kind of signing

That's a good point

Because those two will be backing up our other injury prone pitcher.

Based on everything I've heard from Bruce Miles and other people, it sounds like we'll be able add a little more payroll if necessary once the new owner is chosen.

I wonder if we could get Sheets on a backloaded 3-year deal, where the 3rd year vests based on innings pitched in the first 2 years.

Probably unnecessary to go that long.

New Chicagosports.com article says that Hendry has enough payroll to sign a fifth starter and names Lowe and Pettite as possibilities.

Sheets would be a terrific pickup though. Marshall would still get some big innings between Harden and Sheets.

screw it, just go for it. sign 8 injury prone starters, at any given time 5 of them will likely be healthy

If we have money for a starter, why didn't we just keep DeRosa and not sign Miles? Is getting Mike freaking Fontenot more at bats more important than keeping DeRosa? This one is still a head scratcher unless we are using the Indians prospects as part of a Peavy deal or as replacement for guys we trade for Peavy. Strange stuff.

really. they're already taking so many chances with injury-prone players, they might as well go for it. maybe they luck into all of them being healthy in October and they're golden.

if the Cubs could field a healthy rotation of Harden, Zambrano, Sheets, Dempster and Lilly i'd probably poop in Banedon's bathtub.

Not saying I agree w/ it, but I think the reason DeRo was moved was 3-fold: he was at the peak of his value, he swings w/ the wrong hand & JH thought Bradley could slip away if he didn't move money around & strike while iron was hot. Just my tea leaves...

That's probably right.
