I know Hendry theoretically has leverage, but I really hope he doesnt screw this up. After the October let down, we need something big this off season, and an outfield bat that may or may not be an upgrade over what we already have plus an aged, broken down mulleted pitcher arent going to cut it.

I think Jayson Stark proved over the last few days, that he's not a good sources of information on the Peavy trade. I'm still waiting for a article that has Kevin Towers quotes. With so many rumors right now, those are the only things I really find interesting.

I think the reason we haven't seen a Towers quote in a while is because him and Hendry are actually working on a deal, a lot of his quotes in the media were done early in meetings before they sat down and it was all posturing/negotiating through the media to try and drive up prices. Now that they have been there a few days and are sitting down he likely has less time to talk to the media and needs to get down to business with Hendry and get a deal hammered out. I think the fact neither Hendry/Towers, Towers more than Hendry, have spoken to the media today speaks volumes to the whole situation that both are trying to get a deal done and are too occupied and they don't have the time and energy to be negotiating/posturing through the media.

A bunch of Towers quotes were just posted

Yeah really bad timing there, but the fact that we are just getting the first quotes out of him right now at least means there will be some sort of resolution soon. Up until today he was being quoted almost all day saying things today we haven't heard from him until almost 9 CT, so something likely happened/is going to happen. Some of this could still be posturing before a final deal goes down to maybe get that certain player or a better player added to a final deal.

You really need to stop blaming Hendry if he can't pull off a trade because another team is asking too much. Because you would be the first one to bash him if he gets ripped off in a deal.

50-50, say the Cubs.

20 % percent chance, says the Padres.

Third team isn't an issue.

Yay it's Brian Roberts all over again

Randy Johnson here we come?

Why would I bash Hendry for making a deal that Ive already expected? Theres nobody who would be invloved in this trade that would surprise me. Maybe if Soto or Marmol were invloved, but they wont be.

As for Towers, as of now, hes saying that the Cubs are the only possible destination, but you never know, things could change, especially if Peavy really wants off of a go nowhere team, and teams like the Brewers, Cards, Reds, and Astros would probably be chomping at the bit to go after him, and the have the resources to do it.

I'm beginning to get the feeling either Towers is going to cave and take Marquis + $3-4M as part of the deal, or the deal isn't going to happen.

What about the 4th that Towers just said?

Is it me or is there really nothing in those new repots that we didn't already know?

- A 3rd/4th team might need to get involved

- The Cubs might be able to complete a trade by themselves

- DeRosa could be involved going to a 3rd/4th team

- The earliest a deal will be completed will be after the Rule V

- Towers needs to have a "good feel" about the trade after Thursday to continue negotiating

- Marquis may or may not need to be traded to clear up payroll

- Cubs new ownership could be an issues in bringing on a big contract

- The Cubs #1 priority is a lefthanded OF bat and Peavy is secondary

- The Phillies/Twins/Orioles are possible teams to be involved in a deal

- Lou still wants a Lefthanded bat

- Towers is "intrigued" by a number of players

To me it's nothing more than reporters rehashing a bunch of already known information into new stories by using a couple more recent quotes by Towers/Insiders/Cubs FO, nothing real groundbreaking here. But then again that's just my opinion and I could be completely wrong.

Seriously, screw Johnson. Why does everyone forget that we didnt need a starter to begin with, and we only went after this deal is because Peavy is a special kind of pitcher, and it wasnt an opportunity to pas up. Theres no point going after a consolation prize that nobody wants or needs. Just count your losses and go after a bat.

I'm worried about the rotation

At least we will know tomorrow probably if a deal can get done or not. It's alot better to figure this out now, then go into spring training, still wondering if we can get Peavy or not like we did with Brian Roberts. I'm starting to think a deal won't get done, and have kinda thought that the last day or two. It would be awesome to get Peavy, but honestly it's not the end of the world if we don't get him.

Why? Johnson would be injured half the time anyway. Zambrano, Harden, Lilly, Dempster, Marquis is still the best in the division, maybe the NL. I know that even if Harden goes injury free, they'll keep him in a glass case half the time, and Marshall can sub for him.

CC, Lowe, and Burnett are all but spoken for, and aside from Peavy, theres nothing else out there that would be considered an upgrade over what we already have. unless...no...Sheets? Only if we really want to relive the Wood/Prior saga with 2 oft injured aces.

I know its likely just leverage, but I hate to see the Padres claiming 20% odds of this trade getting done. Ugh. It really is Brian Roberts all over again.

What reassures me is following the Santana trade talks last year there was such a roller coaster ride of emotions before it finally got done.

I don't think that's leverage, since Churchill is not a reporter and doesn't post this anywhere. They'd have no reason to lie/posture to him. He's just a friend.

Who knows how legit that source is, though.

What do you expect the Pads to say? They aren't motivated to be honest here. Their motivation is to say whatever helps gain them leverage so they can get more. Right now, their only leverage is their ability to keep Peavy.

But everyone knew Santana was going somewhere, the question was where. With Peavy its Chi Town or bust.

It's a much more pessimistic tone than they've been taking for the last week. Everything coming from Towers to this point has been positive/optimistic/encouraging.

I never said I wanted Johnson, I'm just saying I'm worried about the rotation. Hardne is pretty much a lock to go down for an extended period, and then what if Dempster starts pitching like he has pitched his entire career? Then suddenly that rotation is looking pretty bad. Plus you have to at least be a little concerned with Zambrano's arm.

Somehow word got to Churchill through some sort of media connection that the Padres say that there was 20% chance of a trade happening. How is that not trying to get leverage?

Who is this Churchill guy? Is he a writer or a TV/Radio guy? No offense intended, but if he doesn't have enough confidence to print these things he emails you, I don't believe it.

I;m glad it sounds like their will be closure soon, but I'd much rather wait a few months for good news than get bad news tomorrow. Hopefully, Hendry gets this done. Peavy is a stud.
