Ah, James Hendry. Has he not learned his lesson? Let Vlad go elsewhere because he had Alou in the last year of his deal. Let Beltran go elsewhere because he wanted to get rid of Sosa first. Let Tejada go elsewhere, because he had Alex Gonzalez on the last year of his deal. Don't let the same thing happen because of Jason Marquis. Do the deal that's on the table if it is a good deal and worry about Marquis later.

this is why i've been saying that i'm worried about hendry and lou's obsession with adding a pricy lh bat like ibanez/abreu. to add one of those guys and peavy, he pretty much has to trade marquis. i think he's worried about the possibility of trading for peavy, getting stuck with marquis, and then not having enough money to get that bat.

I know that's what he's worried about and I think it's stupid. If he could get rid of Sammy Sosa and Todd Hundley, he can get rid of Jason Marquis. If you want to get rid of someone enough, you can do it. Hendry has proven it himself.

if somebody like raul ibanez ends up costing the cubs peavy this would be the most disastrous offseason ever

Agreed. If Lou really is willing to throw away one of the best pitchers in the game over an aging outfielder who will probably be broken down by the last year of his contract, he deserves to have his MOY award revoked.

You mean Hendry and his EOY award?

This is why Towers has been airing all of these updates... Everybody in the world knew that he had to move Peavy and his only option was the Cubs, so he had no leverage. He's trying to create some by affecting public opinion towards Hendry if the deal doesn't go through. If the public would just calm down and be laissez faire about it, Hendry would probably be able to pull a better deal out of this.

Lou is the one demanding the LH bat, and its not like any of the avilable are steller. I know Hendry is the one who makes the decision, but Im sure Lou has some say in the matter.

Not being privy to many other team's GMs, how is Towers historically? Is he someone easy to deal with, or do we have another Roberts deal on our hands?

Any input appreciated.

Definitelty. Towers is doing his best to make sure everyone out there knows that hes doing what he can to make this happen, and if it falls through, its Hendrys fult and not his.

Peavy deal hinges only on Marquis move

By Jeff Passan, Yahoo! Sports

LAS VEGAS – The lone holdup in a deal sending San Diego Padres ace Jake Peavy to the Chicago Cubs is the team’s ability to trade starting pitcher Jason Marquis, a source close to the situation said Tuesday night.

The Cubs are trying to offload Marquis and his $9.875 million salary to make room for Peavy’s four-year, $63 million contract, plus a $22 million option in 2013 that would likely need to be exercised for him to drop his no-trade clause.

The potential trade, a complicated affair involving a third and perhaps fourth team, would send a handful of prospects back to the rebuilding Padres and ship Cubs utilityman Mark DeRosa to the Phillies. Baltimore has also been involved in the discussions. Whether Marquis would go to Philadelphia, Baltimore, San Diego or, perhaps, another team was unclear.

Padres general manager Kevin Towers met with Cubs GM Jim Hendry on Tuesday afternoon, and Towers said he expected to touch base with Hendry as the evening waned to gauge whether the deal would take place.

Towers said earlier this week that the Cubs were the only destination for Peavy, the 2007 National League Cy Young winner, and that he’d be the opening day starter for the Padres were the framework of a deal not in place by the end of the winter meetings.

“We’ve made progress,” Towers said. “We’ve still got work. Nothing’s imminent.”

Yeah guys! Stop complaining or we might not get Peavy!

I don't think so. Everytime Lou is asked about Peavy or anybody else, he imediately says they don't need it and that their real need is a LH bat.

I don't think anyone means that...but everyone does need to understand they're going through a negotiation process, and what we're hearing right now is what should be expected if we were very close to making a deal under these circumstances.

The Cubs were said to have been approached by another club -- or more -- Tuesday involving players that could be in the Peavy deal. That could mean either Marquis or DeRosa, or both.

Another twist, that likely will mean more delays if this deal is to be completed: The Padres are looking to pick one player -- and perhaps more -- in Thursday morning's Rule 5 draft and, as a result, they may need to clear some space on their 40-man roster to make room for some of the players in a potential Peavy trade.

That presents a scenario in which the Cubs and Padres could agree to a deal in a day or two but delay announcing it until Friday, Saturday or later.

Towers said he believes Hendry has the power to move now in personnel decisions despite the Cubs' impending sale.

"My impression is he has the ability to move if he is comfortable with what he's giving up," Towers said.

Hendry said on Monday that he is operating with no restrictions while the impending sale progresses.

As for finding the money to take on a salary like Jake Peavy's, Cubs Chairman Crane Kenney, who was also in the Cubs War Room, said that there's room in the budget, or at least maneuvering in the budget for a big deal.

BBB is correct. The protected player list was submitted back in November.

I hate doing MLPeel's job. He was much better at it than I.

If we could get CubColtPacer to post here more often, I would bequeth that responsibility onto him.

Someone thinks I don't post enough..I'm glad I have it in writing or else my wife would never believe it

And you're doing just fine with the job :D. Both you and Tim were correct. That deadline was November 20th to protect players for the Rule 5 draft. BTW, the Padres roster is at 37, so they have some wiggle room to add as they see fit.

As for the person earlier on the page who asked about Towers, he's a well respected GM who is willing to take risks in trades. Things might not work out between the Padres and the Cubs, but it won't be because Towers refused to make up his mind or keeps changing what he wants.

Sounds like Towers is calling Hendry out. Seriously, I refuse to belive that this deal would be blocked over a matter of 5 million dollars.

I really feel like that is the holdup. Hendry is talking to multiple teams about players involved in the deal, like DeRosa or Marquis. Maybe 2 or 3 teams want Marquis and Hendry is just trying to get them to take on most of his salary. Hendry is really in no hurry. He is just trying to get the best deal right now. Maybe when Thursday comes he'll make up his mind. I don't think anything will happen until then.

Towers changes his story depending on who he is talking to...

First it was... Hendry has to clear it with ownership

Now it is ......Hendry doesn't need to clear it with ownership.

BTW why in the hell did Hendry sign Ryan Dempster? He should have used the money and traded for Peavy and signed a decent RF option. Nobody in their right mind would pick Dempster over Peavy for the same amount of money.

At the time, the Peavy talks were in limbo. Still, there was no need to jump on it as fast as Jim did. Every other free agent pitcher is still avaialble, so theres no reason to believe that Demp wouldnt be.
