We'’ve spoken to a source within the negotiations that say Jim Hendry and Kevin Towers are very close to making the Peavy deal happen.

Jim Hendry is speaking to the media at 6:30 central time. We'll know more then.

It is now... 6:37. What's going on?

I assume Hendry has met with the media yet, he could be still talking with Towers. Sportsnite said they would break in with news if anything happend.

Talked directly with the Cubs, who said today they are "going in a different direction" from the Peavy talks but the talks aren't dead.

As of this morning, the Cubs had pulled left-handed starter Sean Marshall from advanced trade talks, which pleased Cubs manger Lou Piniella. The Cubs want the Padres to instead take starting pitcher Jason Marquis. A major issue there is how much money the Cubs would eat. The Padres would need the Cubs to pay more than half of the $9.8 million due Marquis. Whether the Cubs can make a better side deal is part of the dynamics a making a trade fit. The Cubs also are talking to the agent of Randy Johnson. If they move Marquis and sign Johnson, they could pull the plug on the Peavy talks.

The Padres have asked for Cubs pitching prospect Angel Guzman, but Chicago's scouts are reluctant to move him, especially now that the right-hander is throwing 96 miles-per-hour in Venezuela.

I assume that means today we talked more with FA's than about trades, right?

CSN said at the beginning (10 minutes ago) that Chuck was going to talk with Hendry in an hour I believe so maybe they delayed it an hour as Towers and Hendry are still meeting.

ugh...it seems like this is falling apart quickly

We have another source saying the exact opposite. Just wait and see.

From PSD forum:

Kevin Towers is supposed to be on the Padres flagship radio station at 5pm (7pm for you Central folks).

If I hear anything interesting I'll post it.

It just seems like it's saying they focused on other things, presumably FA's, today rather than talking more trade.

Yikes. You'd think the manager with the "power pitching" fetish would be happy to see Marshall go in exchange for Peavy.

Well, if Hendry is speaking to the media and Towers is doing a radio interview, then maybe something has went down......

it kind of pisses me off that lou tries to act like the gm so much. "i want this"... "no wait... i want this".... "wait, i want that other thing again". just let jim do his job

Count me in the group of guys who doesn’t like trading DeRosa. Peavy is amazing, but I really really really don’t want to trade DeRosa. He is so much more valuable than even his good stats indicate. He can play everywhere, he’s a great clubhouse guy, and he’s one of the few major leaguers and Cubs players who I think ‘gets it,” as in what it means to be a MLB ballplayer, what it means to be a Cub, what it would mean for the Cubs to win a WS. He’s liked and respected in the clubhouse. He can put up similar stats to last year again (minus some power numbers) and do it all while playing his ass off and contributing everything to this team, which is more than I can say for other members of this roster.

I understand that Peavy is way more valuable than DeRosa in terms of player value. But the value DeRosa brings to this roster is so far above and beyond stats that I think losing him would be a bigger shock to the team than people realize.

I’m torn on it. Let’s see what happens. We need hitting more than pitching. Dealing from our “weakness” (we had a damn good offense last year, but choked in the playoffs) to acquire yet another piece of our strength…I’m very leery.

Just read those updates. Worried about dealing Guzman? We've been worried about dealing him away for the past 5 years now. Deal him, who cares.

Cool. An excuse to go out to the car and have a cigarette. 1090 is already dialed up on my car stereo.

Our pitching is far from our strength when Marquis is on the mound.

Exactly..He hasn't done anything for us since he's been here. Always hurt or was never that effective when he was healthy..Might be a bullpen guy down the line, thats about it..But you gotta trade him if its for Peavy
