If this is "holy jive crazy idea time", just how cheap is Nomar? :-))

Doesn't matter, he's not effective at any position and he can't stay healthy.

Oh man, Nomar being a Cub again would be my wet dream.

He played some 2B last year, right? Obviously he mashes lefties (and really anyone when he's healthy). I can't imagine he'd cost all that much. Interesting idea. Don't think he'd stay healthy though.

Stop doing this to me.

The whole thing

UPDATED 12:57 p.m. — Cubs, Peavy "not close"

The Cubs maintain that they are "not even close" to a trade for Padres right-hander Jake Peavy and continue to mull a run at free-agent lefty Randy Johnson if the price for Peavy proves too steep.

The Cubs' first priority remains the acquisition of a left-handed hitter; they are considering trades for players such as the Marlins' Jeremy Hermida and free agents such as Milton Bradley, Raul Ibanez and Bobby Abreu.

No deal for Peavy can be completed until the Cubs' new owner is identified; the new owner would need to approve the addition of the four years and $63 million remaining on the pitcher's contract.

The Phillies have emerged as the potential third team in the Peavy discussions, with the Padres targeting Phillies lefty J.A. Happ and Cubs infielder/outfielder Mark DeRosa emerging as a possibility for the Phillies.

The Cubs would need to move right-hander Jason Marquis to clear payroll and roster space for Peavy. Marquis could go to the Padres as part of the deal or to another club in a separate trade.

If it is true that they have to wait for the new owner to approve, the deal won't get done. That said, I don't know if this is true especially if Marquis is traded.

Bruce said it's not true.

The fact that Rosenthal keeps bringing up the new owners stuff makes me not pay much attention to his information. Other sources and even the Cubs themselves said the ownership situation won't effect what their doing this offseason. The Cubs are unlikely to have a new owner for a few months. So does that mean we can't make trades or sign players? That just doesn't make much sense to me. Edited by cubsfan26

Rosenthal is an idiot, basically what he says, contradicts everything that has come out the past couple of days. I mean you had rogers i believe saying that a source close to hendry said the deal is very close. Then about the whole ownership, I'm pretty sure i caught a clip on Comcast Sportsnet of Hendry saying that the cubs had run by the three prospective bidders their plans and that they all approved. I dont think the ownership situation needs to be resolved before the Peavy deal gets done because Hendry or Kenney can always ask for the approval from prospective bidders on a possible deal The only thing i agree with Rosenthal is that Marquis needs to go before Peavy gets done. To me it sounds like Rosenthal is tyring to update his posts frequently and would put anything out there just to put it out there. Bruce if you're out there please debunk this Rosenthal Post and let us know the latest on Peavy.

People need to stop even acknowledging the mention of that stupid storyline. It's not true. End of story. Bruce doesn't need to refute it every time it's repeated.

Fine by me. I just posted it without realizing how much it's been refuted.

And yeah, Rosenthal seemed good last offseason but now he's not saying anything new or breaking.

Nobody knows more than anyone else in terms of rumors. They're all just rumors. There's usually something to them, but that doesn't mean they're going to wind up coming to fruition. They all have their sources. Granted, some of them may be more accurate than others in certain cases, but I don't think there's any method to it.

Every one of these guys is wrong a lot. There's no sense in acting like "so and so is a moron because this stuff he reported didn't wind up being true."

That said, it is annoying that Rosenthal keeps repeating that line, but I guess it's what he's hearing from whoever he hears things from.

Sports Center live just reported the Cubs are not close to getting Peavy, but named no sources that I heard.

According to Towers it's all in Hendry's hands now.
Now, all Padres general manager Kevin Towers needs is for his Cubs counterpart, Jim Hendry, to give him the go-ahead to make the deal

O's could be getting Marquis

As usual read as little or as much into this as you want. Here's the deal I was told that was on the table to the Cubs:

Cubs get Peavy from SD

Orioles get Pie, Marquis + 4 million cash from CHI

Phillies get Derosa from CHI

SD gets Hill, Vitters, Cedeno from CHI, Olson form Bal, Happ from PHI

I personally don't think the Orioles are invovled at this point, as a few articles quoted some Phillies sources saying their 3 way was more likely than any four way.

I dont think i'll be alone in being ticked off if Hendry is the one thing that causes this thing to not go down.

I guarantee Hendry won't be "the only thing" that causes this not to go down.
