Everyone's favorite Cubs.com writer chimes in:

You know how Padres GM Kevin Towers says he's still taking to the Cubs about a possible deal for Jake Peavy? Well, a Cubs source told MLB.com on Wednesday that those talks have ended. The Cubs could either sign Ryan Dempster or add Peavy in a trade, but can't afford both. With Dempster agreeing to a four-year contract on Tuesday, that pretty much ends discussions with the Padres about the right-hander.

I'm not giving up, and I would hope Hendry wouldn't, either. I can appreciate a comment like "we can't afford Milton Bradley, or Bobby Abreu". But when a guy like Peavy is available, you make room in your budget, even if it means someone has to go. The rumors that have floated around was that the Cubs could get Dempster AND Peavy, and another one was the Cubs could get Dempster and Randy Johnson. Hendry was quoted directly as still having interest in Peavy, so I'm not going to take much stock in anything Muskat writes on the subject.

Where did he say that? AllI saw from him was the "we're keeping our options open and are always looking to improve the club" stuff.

wouldn't lee make sense for the yankees? i know they just got swisher, and that would make another hole to fill, but...

He would, but it's doubtful he would accept a trade to NY considering his home is in Sacremento. If Lee get's dealt this offseason it will be to a West Coast team.

Payroll stands at $129 mil. before arbitration for Gaudin, Gregg, Johnson, Cotts & Wertz. Those contracts probably push payroll over $140 mil. (before adding a LH bat). So, I think it's safe to say that acquiring Peavy means at least $8 mil. of payroll has to go (somewhere other than the Padres, of course). Marquis to another team with a couple mil. in cash thrown in? Lee, Lilly or Fukudome for the young pitching the Padres are after (assuming any of them would waive their NTCs)? DeRosa & Gaudin? Marquis seems the most feasible and attractive for the Cubs, but I don't think he's going to attract much interest until more of the SP market settles out.

I think Hendry will continue to pursue Peavy, but it has to be a long shot at this point.

We should also keep in mind that acquiring Peavy all but guarantees that Harden won't be resigned in 2010.

If Lee were to get traded is anyone confident that Hoffpauir could be next year's Soto? Good way to clear some salary and add a left handed bat to the lineup (since that seems to matter to Hendry).

I'm not confident he'd be next year's Soto, but I'd imagine he could put up somewhat similar numbers to what Lee has put up the last two seasons, and as you say, be much cheaper and be a lefty bat.

I'm confident that he would be terrible. That's about it.

no chance. Hoffpauir's bat is not special at 1B or, if he can even play there, in an outfield corner

I doubt Hoffpauir could come close to replacing Lee's production over a full season, but he might be a plausible stop gap - particularly if you can find a cheap RH platoon partner.

SAN DIEGO -- The Chicago Cubs are still a player in the Jake Peavy sweepstakes, even after the club signed free-agent pitcher Ryan Dempster to a $52 million contract.

San Diego general manager Kevin Towers said Wednesday night that he has talked to Cubs GM Jim Hendry earlier in the day and that "they still have interest."

"They're still a player," Towers said. "... They might have to be creative with their finances to make it work."

What do you mean "the last 2 seasons"? Lee's 08 was nothing like his 07. His 2007 season was like the second best of his career.

What about his numbers indicate to you that he would be "terrible"? I have little doubt that he could match Lee's numbers from last year over the course of a full season.

Or Geovany Soto? Hoffpauir didn't exactly look overmatched in his big league AB's either.

Soto is like 3 years younger and a rare breed. You can't just compare every player who comes out of nowhere to Soto. Plus matching Lee's 08 production isn't some big feat, especially when you consider his defense would be significantly worse. I'm not saying Hoffpauir would be terrible, but I'd be willing to bet good money that Lee would be significantly better than Hoffpauir in 09. 73 at-bats doesn't tell you much. I' put more stock into the fact that he had 24 K's in 73 at-bats to only 6 walks, and almost all of the AB's came against RHP.

What do you mean "the last 2 seasons"?

What else could it mean? I wasn't speaking in code.

No, I'm wondering why you are implying that his last 2 seasons have been similar when they aren't even remotely close. I think you thought his 2007 was bad when really it was his second best of his career.

note that micah's career minor leagues OPS is .833. note that derrek lee's OPS in 2008 was .823

Career minor league OPS doesn't always work though. Soto's is .784. Heck Derrek Lee's career minor league OPS is .844. Hoffpauir has made significant progress over the past two seasons.

Derrek Lee was in the minors until age 21. Hoffpauir was until age 28. Bad comparison.

Eh, now that I look at his stat sheet, you're right. Didn't realize his 2007 was that good.

Yeah, I'd be thrilled if we could get those kind of numbers. Unfortunately I think we're going to get closer to the 2008 lee
