Signing Randy Johnson would be one more step towards taking a 97 win team and making it an 87 win team.

Why? He had an ERA+ of 117 in 180 IP last year. If he's the only move, and we lose Dempster, then perhaps it's a step backwards. But he's definitely worth the one year 8-10 million dollars he's going to demand and I feel like he would be added in addition to another SP.

He's been bad more than he's been good the last three years, he's injury prone, and he's another year older. We shouldn't build expectations solely on his second half last year.

Worth a shot for a 1 yr deal. Just get rid of Marquis.

I didn't realize he won 4 straight Cys!

And deserved the 2004 Cy Young.

Hiom winning 4 straight Cy Youngs has nothing to do with him being old, and probably bad.

We need to stay away. Far away.

How can you make the assumption that he'll probably be bad? He's still a good deal better than average.

Cause he's 45 and injury prone?

I seriously can't believe anyone is considering this a good idea.

Who was saying that his previous awards makes him worth signing?

I'm not sure if whoever brought it up had that intention per se, but bringing it up within a discussion of possible interest would seem to indicate that it's relevant, which it isn't.

I was the one who brought it up.

I said it's worth a shot. And then I said, wow, I didn't realize he won 4 straight Cy Youngs. (Something I noticed when visiting his BR page). Wasn't trying to make a connection.

Injury prone doesn't make him less effective, it just makes him effective less often.

I'm not saying I want to pay a few million dollars to get the same production Sean Marshall can give us... I just don't think it's correct to predict that he'll be bad.

If he's injury prone, then you have to factor in the production that the replacement would get. IF we still have Marshall, then that's not much of a dropoff, if any at all...assuming Johnson wouldn't go down at the same time as Z or Harden inevitably will. Then you have to look at the next starter in line. The fact that we have a couple of other injuryprone starters in the rotation makes Johnson a riskier and less valuable sign for us.

Maybe the Cubs can get RJ to play for free. Afterall, if we are giving him a salary, he'll have to give up collecting social security.

but ollie perez is a better option?

if they were at the same price, yes

Then we disagree

"Big Game Ollie" FTW.

Saying Oliver Perez is as good as Randy Johnson is ABSURD. Randy Johnson has as good a K rate, and walked 60 less batters last year. 60 LESS! And had a very respectable ERA and adjusted ERA.

Randy Johnson being bad is based off nothing factual, just an assumption because of age. He was better than Lowe, and Ollie last year. And on the second one, it's not particularly close. Hell, he was better than Zambrano too.

who said oliver perez was as good as RJ?

and can people PLEASE stop using the phrase "and it's not particularly close"? that's right up there with "been there, done that" and "too much information".

Harden

Zambrano

Lilly

Marquis

Marshall

or

Peavy/Dempster/Lowe

Harden

Zambrano

Lilly

Johnson

If the Cubs can danlge Marquis and replace him with Johnson why not? It's a one year gamble, a roll of the dice that will cost 5-8 millon. It won't saddle the Cubs new ownership with a long term deal that other starters of his caliber in this marketplace will get.

His numbers the last 3 years don't look particularly bad to me, other than the innings pitched in 2007 ... then again, he put up 184 IP last year, 205 in 2006, and 225 in 2005. I wouldn't have any problem with RJ on a one year contract. Especially if it means we're getting rid of Marquis.

He was particularly bad in 2006, putting up an ERA of 5.00, ERA+ of 90. That's worse than Marquis has been for us either of the last two years.

ERA is relatively meaningless if you look at it by itself, which is proven by that bolded statement. Johnson was not bad at all in 2006, he was just very unlucky. Take a closer look at his stats.
