If Wood leaves we can always sign Dempster to be our closer, narf.

Actually, if Wood goes and Howry goes (or someone is dumb enough to take him) and we get Peavy and retain Dempster, as much as I'll hate to see Woody go, I'll welcome those draft picks with open arms.

The only way I see Kerry Wood leaving is because the Cubs couldn't fit him into the budget plans and/or they mutually couldn't agree to a deal. I doubt he wants to leave, and I doubt the Cubs want him to either

I'd rather let Dempster walk and resign Wood if we get Peavy.

And I'm willing to bet there is no way Hendry resigns Howry.

I would to, but it sounds as if getting Dempster has taken priority over getting Wood (double entendre! YAY!)

I'm not too sure I believe that. I worry about the depth of the pen should Wood leave.

Ron Santo would kill Woody.

Ron Santo would have Wood drawn and quartered. Man, I would have Wood drawn and quartered. If he signs elsewhere hopefully its with an AL team like the Rangers or Indians. Watching Wood pitch against the Cubs would utterly destroy me.

Maybe Newsday can convince the Mets to sign Trevor Hoffman - that would at least eliminate one team from stealing Kerry away from the Cubs. I suppose if Wood signs elsewhere, the Cubs could sign Hoffman, but there is a big drop-off from Wood to Hoffman, and I still think Wood would give the Cubs a hometown discount.

That blog is pure garbage. I don't even attempt to read it anymore.

Nothing personal towards you, but why is it that practically everytime any sportswriter is mentioned on this board, there's invariably someone who comes in and says that said writer sucks/is garbage/knows nothing/is an idiot?

Seriously, I don't think I've seen any sportswriter not catch flak here (save Bruce Miles, who I assume gets a pass from some people because he posts occasionally). I don't read the sportswriters regularly, but damn ... they can't all be anti-Cubs biased, rumor-mongering, sensationalist baseball morons, can they?

My 2 cents: It's because their bosses have demanded that they become sensationalist morons who spew completely irrational ideas that have no base in reality or coherent thought. It's unfortunate that they have to pander to the lowest common denominator to sell papers instead of actually being good journalists and writing things that make sense.

Yep, everyone calls individual sportswriters sensationalist hacks because they're sensationalist hacks. These guys for the most part suck. Bruce gets some leeway for coming here, but people were fans of his long before he posted here.(And his chats don't make a It makes sense to give Bruce some leeway too because we have a bit of a view into him and can see his beliefs on baseball. Meanwhile, hobbits like Paul Sullivan have their chance to connect directly to his readers and instead he treats them like they're not worthy of his time in his dumbass mailbag.

Nowhere else in your life will you find a field where people think they know so much, when in fact they know so little.

Fair enough. I do have to admit that some of the sensationalism spices up the offseason, though. It's always fun to consider the crazier proposals, even if most never pan out.
