Ball State rises to 14th in the BCS. They need to pass two of Utah, Boise State and Ohio State to make the Orange Bowl. All three have lose-able games left, but the odds look pretty long.

Dude, we don't want to see North Carolina drill Ball State. Go to a decent bowl where you actually have a chance of beating your opponent.

I watched North Carolina play Notre Dame, and there is very little chance that they would "drill" us.

v. BU, CU, aTm, NU; first team offenses only

B12 offenses: 4.02 points per possession

ACC offenses: 2.70 points per possession

This because I dont like Joe Maddon math of 9=8. TD=7, FG=3. % scoring per drives isnt very accuare of offense efficiency.

PSU and OSU as good as those B12 offenses?? Cmon. PSU is the best in the B10 and they cant touch OU/MU/T/TT. Ohio States offense is hit or miss, they rely on the big play so much its not even funny.

And what's this about Big 12 defenses can't stop ACC offenses? Your sample is 4 games, where the 6th, 9th, 10th, and 11th best teams in the Big 12 played the 6th, 4th, 3rd, and 2nd best teams in the ACC respectively(rankings by Sagarin). Of course they were going to do well in those games. It's like saying the Big 12 is going to dominate the bowl season because they hung a ton of points in Texas v. Arkansas, Mizzou v. Illinois, Oklahoma v. Washington, and Oklahoma State v. Washington State.

We're talking about the #3, #6, #11 and #12 offense in the ACC (that averages to #8) against the #5, #6, #9 and #11 defenses in the Big XII (that also averages to #8). So we've got basically a fair sample in that respect.

There's doing well in those games, and there's doing alarmingly well. In fact, those four teams had their BEST games in those four games as far as offensive efficiency goes. THEIR BEST! Sure it's only four games, but it's pretty damn alarming and that is all we got. It's just noteworthy that an average ACC offense has shown the ability to put up points at an elite level against an average Big XII defense. That's not good. In a sport where we have very few direct overlapping of elite teams, things like this become very important.

Again, I'm not making the argument that the offenses are as good as the Big XII offenses. I am merely making the argument that the Big XII is a very offensive friendly environment by virtue of their bad defenses. We need to account for this. The relationship isn't linear, and I am making that point too because I am really not downgrading Texas Tech, Missouri at all.

UNC is improving by the minute and is a legit top fifteen team. they're better than you and by quite a bit. they may not "drill" you but theyd handedly beat you by two touchdowns or more in all likelihood.

I didn't say the Ohio State offense was good as theirs. I did say Penn State was, and there's a lot of evidence to make that argument. Like scoring at a high rate in a conference that plays defense. I said that Ohio State was as good as Oklahoma, Texas and Texas Tech, overall....factoring in defense etc.

if i had to sit down and rank the teams in tiers, alphabetical order

Tier One:

Florida

Southern Cal

Tier Two:

Alabama

Georgia

Ohio State

Oklahoma

Penn State

Texas

Tier Three:

Brigham Young

Louisiana State

Missouri

North Carolina

Texas Christian

Texas Tech

Utah

Tier Four (big tier, 20 teams or so all of comparable level):

Oklahoma State

A lot of teams including Ole Miss and Iowa

You can make a pretty good argument that some of the third tier teams belong in the fourth tier, including Missouri.

So wait, your telling me.. Because Texas Tech plays in the Big 12, which plays bad defense. That the Texas Tech offense couldnt score on teams in the SEC like Florida or Bama?

This cuts both ways, and it makes the argument pretty pointless. Colorado's output against FSU is matched only by their performance against Iowa State or their two awful non-con games. Same thing with Nebraska and Virginia Tech. Same with Texas and Arkansas, same with Oklahoma and Washington. It's the type of conclusion based on so little data and so little common sense that the only way you logically come to it is if you were looking for it in the first place.

You can't look at it that way. You're talking about teams that usually score only 2 out of 12 times scoring 3 out of 13 times or something. I am talking about teams that usually hit 4 out of 12 times hitting 28 out of 42 times. In fact, the probability that the defenses they faced being as good as the average defense on their schedule is less than one in twenty. I'm sorry, the simple fact is we have enough evidence to say diffuse the argument that the Big XII defenses are as good as the ACC's. Yes, it is only four games, but the data is enough of an outlier to make the conclusion. Once you accept that the defenses in the conference are worse than your typical defense in other BCS conferences, it's pretty easy to see that the offensive numbers by OU, Mizzou, Tech, Okie State and UT are inflated. There's no discussion here. You cannot argue otherwise. It's not up for debate. Its pretty much a statement of fact. How much to deflate them is up for debate, however.

Anyways even if you COULD look at it that way, I am not trying to make an argument about the quality of the ACC defenses. The simple fact is that these ACC teams have had their best outputs against Big XII teams...and those outputs are comparable to the "elite" offenses of the Big XII. We're not talking about a slight increase. It's pretty damn substantial.

Those outputs are not comparable to the elite B12 offenses, I already showed that.

That's quite an exaggeration. FSU scored at least as many points in 4 other games, including Miami and Clemson. Miami did it 3 other times, including FSU. 3 times within 1 score for VTech, including FSU and BC.

god. you guys have no idea how to analyze how good a defense is. how often you allow someone to get into scoring range is a lot better indicator of how bad your defense is than whether or not you fave up a TD or a field goal. youre analyzing it from the offensive point of view, not the defensive point of view. ability to prevent TDs relative to field goals is random. just like fumbles.

youre also looking at aggregate points which is useless.

the point is we've taken a group of four teams who roughly score about 1 out 3 times in each of their drives in the conference (some above, some below) who then nearly scored 60 percent of the time out of 50 or so chances. That's a lot of information. Obviously, we can do the connections elsewhere, and the more you expand this the more you see the ACC increase relative to the Big XII, while the other conferences seem to maintain their rankings relative to the ACC. There are ways to objectively define these relationships. The more and more you dig the worse and worse it gets for the Big XII defenses and eventually that factors down to the offense, to a certain extent.

I really dont see why you think you can argue that the defenses in this conference arent any worse than defenses in other conferences. Just watch the games. They are terrible. Blown assignments left and right. 15 yard windows to throw in all day, not to mention three QBs with record breaking completion rates. factor all of this in, and you've got a conference full of bad defenses.

that being said, ive maintained the entire time that the offenses are still good, but not as good as most people think. in fact florida plays real defenses and scores better than anyone in the big xii, except texas tech and texas tech played two fcs schools in nonconference.

Nobody's saying that Big 12 defenses are great. They're saying that youre methodology in "proving" this "fact" of ACC superiority is based on flawed and downright ignorant bases, and if you don't understand why that is, then there's no point in trying to explain it to you.

I will be in Ames on Saturday, hopefully celebrating a Big 12 North title at the end of the game. Please don't make it the fiasco from Mizzou's last trip to Ames.

You should go see the Nadas on Friday night.

This is interesting:

Blue is obviously first down, green second and red third/fourth

As someone who has analyzed the hell out of baseball and knows the general r^2s we get by doing various things to baseball statistics, simple polynomial regressions of degree two give us a strikingly accurate regression.

For First Downs:

ExPts = 6.0224623 - 0.0771018 * {Yardline} + 0.0002431 * {Yardline}^2

r^2 = .9916

For Second Downs:

ExPts = 5.7606305 - 0.0819465 * {Yardline} + 0.0002937 * {Yardline}^2

r^2 = .9866

For Third/Fourth Downs:

ExPts = 4.9337141 - 0.0804951 * {Yardline} + 0.0003323 * {Yardline}^2

r^2 = .9841

It's because the sample sizes are much much smaller.

I remember watching Ball St. play in 2005 and they were one of the worst teams I have ever seen (granted a bunch of their team was suspended). How the hell did they become good?

i see PSU was quickly kicked back down to the noon time slot.

it has nothing to do with losing. every big 11 team needs to play on the big 11 network at least once, and psu hadn't done so yet. obviously they weren't going to put our last game on there, so indiana it is.

Great recruiting. Brady Hoke's first few teams were awful, partly I'm sure because he'd never been a head coach before, partly because BSU had no base, but a big part was Bill Lynch's awful recruiting classes from the end of his tenure carrying over. Guys like Nate Davis, Briggs Orsbon, MiQuale Lewis, etc. would've never come here five years ago.

Tonight was our worst game yet. I'll take the 31-16 win, but I was hoping for a slaughter. CMU and WMU are going to be intense.
