he was in the minor league system because he was rehabbing an injury.

Yeah, you're right - he was on the DL to start the year. I had forgotten.

I just wonder what, if anything, the Os fixed with him. And whether or not the Cubs would have found the same thing.

If anything, its just his confidence. He could lose that on any given play for no reason at all.

It probably helps not having Lou as his manager ready to pull him the first time he walks 2 guys in an inning.

I don't think it was confidence. It was a mechanical flaw that Lou and Larry instigated/created/exacerbated in ST to get him to come to home faster b/c guys were stealing on him. It started a chain reaction that I can only compare to a nuclear meltdown. When I saw him pitch in AAA last year he had no clue as to where the ball was going.

I'm pulling for him in a big way.

Listening to the Mariners post-game, all of the hitters basically said he had them guessing the whole night. Obviously the Mariners have a crappy lineup but it still sounded like the performance was more about him than about them - spotting the fastball and being able to throw the curve for strikes in any count. I am in the camp that says he doesnt need a third pitch to be successful. It does sound to me like there has been a correction of a mechanical flaw, and I wish him well. Can someone remind me what the circumstances were around the trade? The Cubs were out of options with him, right? They didn't have the ability to wait out his rehab?

I'm almost certain he was out of options and they weren't comfortable being forced to keep him in the majors all year after the struggles of last season.

I'm definitely pulling for him to do well.

It didn't seem to hurt him much the year before

Is Hill still trying to add a third pitch to his repertoire that he can rely on? A sick curve and a heater isn't enough to be a star unless you're Sandy Koufax

You can be a really good pitcher with 2 pitches, which Hill proved in 2007. I'm sick of this "You can't be good with only 2 pitches as a starter" stuff. all hill needs to be a very good pitcher is good control

Rich Harden throws two pitches and he is a very good pitcher

I'm happy for Rich that he's at least having some good outings. Maybe he's figured something out. But if he turns it around and gives the Os anything close to his 2007 numbers, I'm going to be so pissed off.

Why? It might actually get us an ok live arm from A ball that way. And it's not Rich's fault that there was no spot here.

Yeah, Cubs fans should be rooting for him to do well since it'll improve the return we get for him. I've seen people talk about getting "bothing at all," and that's not the case.

If he has a good year this year, I wonder what type of prospect we'd be looking at.

I am pretty sure that when the trade was announced, we were told that how Rich Hill performed would not change the PTBNL. The group of players that could be selected have already been determined. I could be misremembering, though.

According to the Baltimore re-cap of the game:

If Rich Hill keeps pitching like this, he may turn out to be a fairly expensive acquisition. And if he does, the Orioles will be more than willing to fork over whatever it takes to make his former team happy.

Hill, who was acquired from the Cubs before Spring Training for a conditional player to be named later, mowed through the Seattle lineup Monday, throwing seven scoreless innings in a 1-0 win for Baltimore. The result was the Orioles' second shutout of the season and their first since the first week of the year.

It is a conditional pick, so if he performs very well, we'll get a better prospect. My main question is, how good are we looking? I suspect not a top prospect no matter how well Rich does, but if he approaches 2007 numbers (by chance) then we should get at least a decent prospect.

Regression in today's start. Kind of glad this isn't the Cubs problem any more. It is one thing if he was consistently bad, but the occassional start that get's your hopes way up only to be followed by a complete melt down is really annoying.

He really is a hit or miss pitcher, from start to start. I've never seen anyone go 1 great start, then not be able to get out of the first inning in his next start (simply due to control issues).

I feel bad, but as you said, it's not our problem anymore.

Wow - sound familiar? I wish he was able to get it all together...

He walked three straight batters with one out in the first and forced in runs with a free pass and by plunking Kurt Suzuki with a pitch. Hill retired only two batters, which was puzzling one start after pitching seven shutout innings against Seattle.

O's fans know all about this. To them Rich Hill is the LH version of Daniel Cabrera: sometimes great, sometimes terrible.

Matt Wieters would make us happy.

In all seriousness, just send us Melvin Mora and call it a day. We'll figure out what to do with him when Aramis returns when the time comes.

Yeah, I'm not going to whine if he shocks most of us and succeeds. And we wind up with a legitimate haul in return.

If he succeeds, more power to him. Its not like our starting staff is hurting. Hell, Jason Marquis is at a 20 win pace, and I dont regret moving him, even if he doesn collapse in the second half as we know he will.
