Royals acquired first baseman Mike Jacobs from the Marlins in exchange for RHP Leo Nunez.

Florida was willing to deal Jacobs because he's in for a big raise via arbitration and he'd have been a decent enough pickup for a contending team, but the Royals seemingly would have been better off simply handing first base to Kila Ka'aihue and Ryan Shealy. Jacobs smacked 32 homers this season, but it came with an ugly .299 on-base percentage and he's a 28-year-old with a career .262/.318/.498 hitting line that's mediocre for the position.

And so it begins

hermida to the cubs is next

Hopefully I have always been a big fan of his, I was thinking it would take Ceda, Castillo, and a prospect to get him but seeing as they just traded Jacobs for a 25 year old reliever all it might take is Ceda or Castillo and a prospect. With that recent article saying Fuku to CF and trade for Lefthanded RF, and sign/trade for bullpen help why not try to also get Kevin Gregg included in a Hermida trade, that way we have a backup plan for closer if Wood leaves and Marmol stays in the more valuable spot, or if Wood returns Gregg could become a 6th/7th inning guy.

I like that idea and have read the Marlins may unload Gregg as well.

Getting Gregg along with Hermida would definitely make me feel good about things. These are two low priced guys who could help fill a couple of holes. JH needs to find a couple of solid players on the cheap so that we can retain our free agency eligible guys and/or pick up a couple of higher priced players.

From somebody who knows next to nothing about Hermida, why are we so high on him? Would he be a better option than Abreu or somebody similar on the FA market, or is it just that he's cheap and lets us upgrade elsewhere while retaining our current FAs?

Well he is younger and cheaper than most lefthanded RFer's that are FA, he was a highly touted prospect coming up and is still young 24-25, his home/road splits are pretty drastic(through his whole career) he hit .288 .364 OBP 13 HR 40 RBI on the road this year and only .203 .273 OBP 4 HR 21 RBI at home, thats why a lot of of people want the Cubs to get him they think getting him out of Florida will help him take that next step, and he could easily produce just as much as any of the FA (Abreu, Dunn, Ibanez) for much cheaper. I don't think it would be out of the question for him to hit 25-35 HR .285-.305 .360-.380 OBP and have 90+RBI playing half his games in Wrigley/outside of Florida. If we can get Hermida and Gregg for a combination of Ceda, Castillo, Pie, Fontenot(if uggla is traded), Veal, Atkins, Ascanio, and Hart that would be a great trade for us it strengthens up a questionable bullpen in the 6/7 innings and gives us a legit lefthanded bat for the next 5+ years.

He had great minor league numbers (a career .833 minor league OPS and his final two seasons were 1.115 and 1.074) and put up a 125 OPS+ at the age of 23.

He's still just 25 and is very cheap. He'd also likely see his numbers improve greatly leaving the vast park in Florida and settling in at Wrigley (likewise, his road numbers have been much, much better than his home numbers).

And yes, we'd be able to bring him in and still fill other needs with more pricey guys (potentially).

With the glut of 1B/DH/Corner OF types the Royals have, I wonder if Mark Teahen is a guy Hendry will ask about?

I would ask about Gordon, they might not be totally sour on him yet, but with Moustakas now moved to that spot, I bet you could get him from them. I know this is probably a ridiculous thought, but I know Alex played short a few times last year for them. If he could just be average defensively at short, his bat would be a huge upgrade. Especially if he gets out of yellowstone park.
