how on earth is oklahoma getting a first place vote? and let's also notice that oklahoma is now three spots higher than a team that beat them on a neutral field three weeks ago.

It's weird - they just lost to the current #3 team and recently beat the #4 team. Where can you rank them that doesn't have some quirk? Can't be in the top 3 and you're not going to drop OU a spot to #5, so you had to know Texas would be below OU in the standings this week. 3 spots might be too many, but I don't see how you can rank them higher than 6th right now.

ETA - if you're the AP, I guess you just drop OU 2 spots. Wow.

i don't know what i'd do with the rest of the teams up in that area - alabama, penn st, florida, usc, etc. - but i do know that i would have the big xii teams ranked texas tech, texas, oklahoma. that's the only thing that makes sense right now. tech beat texas and texas beat oklahoma, all within the last month. if tech loses to okie st or oklahoma, then it's a free for all, but right now i don't understand how you can put OU above texas.

Agreed. I don't care that Oklahoma blew out Nebraska this week. That doesn't guarantee that they can't drop a spot in the polls. The AP poll looks fine to me with Texas ahead of Oklahoma and the top-3 all being undefeated teams.

one thing that's not really being stated enough about why UT dropped as far as they did is the fact that their rankings were built upon okie state and mizzou being good teams as well. okie being good is more or less built on just mizzou being good. mizzou's been falling quite a bit of late, im wondering if that's starting to play into voters heads or not (im not saying this is right or wrong, just providing one possible explanation)

the bigger explanation is that, despite being a close loss, texas got outplayed to a greater degree than the scoreboard shows. they gave up 200 more yards and were completely unable to get any kind of running game going to protect McCoy from trying tom complete 80% of his passes while laying on his ass. texas got manhandled in this game.

Missouri gave up 42 points to Illinois - one of their scoring days of the season.

Kansas gave up 31 points to USF - one of their best scoring days of the season.

Colorado gave up 39 to Florida State - one of their best scoring days of the season.

Nebraska gave up 35 points to Virginia Tech - their best scoring day of the season.

Iowa State gave up 34 points to UNLV - one of their best scoring days of the season.

Kansas State gave up 38 points to Louisville - one of their best scoring days of the season.

Kansas State gave up 37 to ULL - who only scored 17 on Illinois - one of their best scoring days of the season.

Oklahoma State gave up 37 to Houston, 24 to Troy.

Texas A&M gave up 41 to Miami...who scored 3 on Florida.

Washington State has scored more than 2 touchdowns against a FBS team once this season - against a Big XII opponent.

Baylor gave up 41 points to Wake Forest - who has scored more than 17 points in just one ACC game this season.

Baylor gave up 31 points to good old UConn as well.

The AP poll is so much better than the coaches', it's too bad the coaches' is the one that matters to the BCS.

I'm thinking there's no way you could rank OU 3-8 without angering someone's fanbase. I don't think OU is deserving of a #1 vote, but blowing out an also-ran shouldn't cause a team to drop in the polls. However, Texas did beat OU, and for now, deserves to be ahead of OU on that merit. I'm guessing OU was the toughest team to rank this week.

Texas fans have pretty good reason to cry this week though. They're definitely better than USC.

Scores, Texas's loss is "better" than USC's loss, USC plays the lesser Pac-10 teams close, Texas has more quality wins.

The bolded is part of what's wrong with the polls. You shouldn't reward/punish a team for whatever impressions you had of it a week ago any more than you should do so for two weeks ago, or five, or preeseason polls. Saying a team shouldn't drop becasue it didn't lose is basically just punishing the teams below for being underappreciated beforehand.

Ok. I see your point, but I still don't know that Texas is better. I understand why they should be ranked higher though.

USC has kicked the crap out of Ohio State. Penn State struggled mightily against the Buckeyes. You can flip that around using Oregon State though. USC's defense has allowed more than 10 points once all season.

Blowing out another team isn't what should cause Oklahoma to drop in the polls, it's another team winning. Texas Tech, which is undefeated but was ranked behind OU, jumped them with the win. Tech beat Texas, the team that beat OU. Regardless of what you think of the other 1-loss teams, there are four teams (Penn State, Alabama, Tech, Texas) who deserve to be ranked ahead of OU. It's too bad for OU that they were ranked No. 4 last week, but they shouldn't be higher than No. 5 right now and they sure as hell don't deserve a No. 1 vote.

How would Penn State have done had the game against OSU been in State College instead of Columbus?

Posted
Did the Ohio State fans play defense? The whole HFA is a six point flip, on average. So it's 19-6 or 16-3 or something. HFA doesn't make it go from 13-6 to 35-3

a six point flip would make it go 13-6 to 19-0 (or 16-3). But that doesn't take into account a true freshmen QB playing in front of 110,000 hostile fans instead of friendly ones.

its not six points on everything. its 6 points total.

i dont think pryor makes a difference....he lost the game at home....he couldnt have played any worse.

I'm just saying that I think PSU struggles less against OSU at home in this case. Either way, it was the only close game PSU has played this year

Bitch all you want about UF, UK is going to another bowl game. Music City, Independence, or Liberty here we come!

Let me edit this since UK is on track to play in the Chick-fil-a bowl.

didnt i tell you guys the third week of the season to watch out for penn state? i dont think ive ever said penn state wasnt good. i dont think they matchup well against USC or Florida (no one really does), but Ive said I think they can beat the top Big XII teams. Again, I havent really been saying the Big Ten is down this year either...its not.

The down side to the Big Ten is there really isn't a distinction between the 3rd best team and the 8th best team. So, though there are probably only two top 25 teams, there are 8 top 40-45 teams. Although, since MSU actually pulled out that victory Saturday, maybe they are the third best team.

Well, that, and Michigan really blows.
